I keep thinking about the piping plover (that we didn't see) at Presqu'ile.
We didn't see him because they closed the beach he was on. The piping plover is endangered, so anywhere they might breed has to be closed if they are spotted. It's smart; hopefully it's not too late to reverse the damage we've done in destroying their habitat.
I think it's really sad that he was there, looking, looking, when it's so unlikely that he will find a mate. The only consolation is that he has no idea how rare he is. He doesn't feel the pressure of extinction, because he doesn't know.
