So I've been working for the City of Berkeley (City Hall) as a receptionist for the City Manager and Mayor and City Council. It was a pretty sweet job in that all I had to do was transfer calls, and, when someone came in to see the City Manager, Mayor, or Councilmember, I'd called their secretary out to get them. Phones would ring maybe once every half an hour and people would come in once every hour. So it was really really chill. Occasionally I'd get one of those difficult people who think they can walk into the Mayor's offices like they are something special. Then I'd have to put on my Mammy voice and demand they come back, identify themselves, and state their business like they are supposed to. Sometimes they'd get mad, and I'd have to put on my "duck's back". Sometimes I'd get the ccasional crazy person who has nothing better to do than find some small insignificant issue to vehemently take a stand about and demand the city to drop everything they're doing to acknowledge it.
So I get to Facebook, LJ, email, and DA all day.
The officials are really nice and supportive and there for me when I come across one of those "crazies", and are always standing by in case things get ugly (which fortunately don't). I'd equate this job to the LLC when I used to work there.
Of course, it gets boring and I'm chained to my desk (need to call people to cover the desk even if I need to go to the bathroom!) so it's definitely not something I'd do for the rest of my life. But for now, it's great. And if I had to go back to school it'd be ideal, cuz I can do homework during work, like I used to at LLC.
Well, I'm going to miss this job cuz I just got "hired" as a temp to perm Database Management Techinician at Western ECI in Colma. ECI essentially is a company that sends out people to survey land for vegetation obstruction and sends data back to me which I'll input into a computer and another company will the to send people out to trim trees. The hours are 7:30-4 (eeeeeewww), and takes just as long to get there as to Berkeley and costs almost as much ($2.55 just to go one stop from Daly City to Colma on BART! vs Montgomery to Downtown Berkeley for $3.40)
But the new job will be a bit more(just a bit) stimulating and will be about as chill. I'll pretty much be working independently and the workload should be steady. The pay is a bit less, but hopefully they'll like me (and I'll like the job) to go on perm and get paid a bit more. The workload seems straightforward and I'll only need to deal with internal people (PG & E and lumberjacks).
It had been hard to adjust getting up at 6am, but I did so I guess I'll just do some further adjusting for this job. I'm really hoping for the best cuz the Berkeley job had been the first job in a long time where I didn't have to deal with difficult bosses, or kiss the asses of difficult people, so I hope this will continue. And here's to getting back to a routine schedule. It helps getting my life somewhat on track.
