Some people simply aren't suitable to play the role of comforter. Case in point, my boss "consoling" sobbing people in my office after one of their former coworkers died from complications during surgery upon a brain tumor after being on sick leave for three months:
"Well, she's at peace now. She's no longer in pain....think of it this way; I retired her three weeks ago and this is how she chose to spend her retirement. It's not how I'd choose, but hey, who knows where I'll be or what I'll be doing in ten years when I'm able to retire?"
The new synonym for tactful empathy is "Gail."
