Characters: Jack Harkness and Simon Simmon
Setting/Location: caravan entrance
Date & Time: morning, day 14, after Simon gets back with the people from the maze
Warnings: n/a
Summary: getting an explanation

Jack had been seeing people come and go from the caravan fairly regularly. Most of them were easy enough to avoid. Then, quite suddenly, the forays into the abandoned village had stopped. It was interesting, but not interesting enough for Jack to go and investigate. The involuntary teleportation, the suspicious animal attack, the strange dreams. From what he'd overheard before people stopped venturing into the city, no one seemed to know exactly what was going on. If they were all in the dark, Jack preferred to be there alone.

Even now he had to wonder how the frazzled man with the ridiculous moustache mask had gotten so close without Jack hearing him. Close enough to see his face, to scold him as though he knew him and demand to know where his junogam was and what he thought he was doing outside. Jack wasn't often surprised, but this... almost did it. Stunned, certainly. Stunned enough to let the man press some ancient tech into his hands, but not quite stunned enough to accept the gruff orders to get back inside. No time to talk, rubbish about sirens and mazes, and Jack began to wonder about the man's sanity. He didn't budge until he heard the magic words - we'll talk when I return. Actually, we'll talk when I return from saving your silly friends, but Jack didn't know what that meant, and he found he didn't much care.

Even a crazy man could offer insight, if you knew how to listen. Best case scenario, Jack got some answers. Worst case scenario, he wasted an hour and ended up back in the abandoned town, now pretty well picked over. The caravan was even more interesting on the inside, but the urge to explore was an easy one to squash. Maybe that was what they counted on. Jack thought of the Escherscapes and shuddered. A million ways in, and no way out. No, he was staying right where he was, back pressed into the wall next to the entrance, waiting for the mysterious little man with the questionable fashion sense to return from his errand.
