not so happy today

We took the cats for their annual vaccinations today. It turns out that Dolorosa has tested positive for feline AIDS. This is fortunately not as serious as the human kind, and hopefully he has several years still ahead of him (he is 10). Freya tested negative and has started the series of vaccinations against it. We went & told all of the neighbours who have cats, and left them information leaflets on feline AIDS (feeling somewhat like lepers).

I am a bit sad but ok. He is not sick at all- this was only diagnosed because I made a comment that he had a small sore (3-4mm) which was slow to heal. The vet decided to do the test on a hunch, and unfortunately he was right.

The symptoms of feline AIDS are a tendancy to more infections, slower healing, and more cancers, but some cats live long & healthy lives with this virus. Up to 25% of cats in some areas of Australia carry the virus, so it is very common.
