Character Discussion and Theory

So I’ve heard a good many questions and theories about Hikusaak floating around since III came out. Is Hikusaak a he or a she? Are Luc and Sasarai his lookalikes, or did their Runes or the process itself choose their appearance, and is Hikusaak blond-haired and blue eyed? Is he/she alive or dead? What does he/she want with the True Runes?

Personally, I believe Hikusaak is alive and well, and still paying attention to what’s happening in his country. In III, Sasarai clearly distrusts Luc, and he received orders directly from Hikusaak himself to ordain the masked bishop. I don’t think a man who’s ruled what’s arguably the most powerful country in the world for hundreds of years is so stupid to give that order without knowing who the person is. I think Hikusaak knew who Luc was, and ordered that he be ordained anyway, for his own ends.

I can’t honestly say I have an opinion either way on Hikusaak’s gender, amazing as that is. ^^; I thought it would be incredibly interesting to write female-Hikusaak during the Aronian war, though. As for his appearance, I believe he’s blond and blue-eyed, just as all first-class citizens are, and that Sasarai and Luc’s appearance comes from their Runes. I know there’s the argument that he could be like Hitler was, having such a law and not being blond and blue-eyed himself. But not only does that give me the creepy image of Sasarai with a Hitler-mustache, but it raises another point to me.

We know even after Hitler’s death that he wasn’t blond and blue-eyed because there are pictures of him. And while Harmonia may not have cameras, as a religious figure and hero, I’m sure his portrait is all over the place, at least in the Temple. Wouldn’t there be rumours and questions then, if young Sasarai popped out of nowhere looking like Hikusaak? Luc’s news came as a complete shock to Sasarai, and in the manga the latter even talks about having been told his parents were in an accident. I don’t think it’d be such a shock to him if he was already wondering ‘why do I look just like Hikusaak?’ I think it’s more a case of ‘true Harmonians are blond with blue eyes because the Hero Hikusaak was blond with blue eyes’ than ‘Hikusaak believed his Harmonians should be blond with blue-eyes, so all true Harmonians are.’

When it comes to the True Runes, I think he wants them because he’s looking to force order on the world, his way. The Circle Rune causes things to stagnate and stay the same, so it seems logical to me that as its bearer, he thinks there should just be one nation doing things the same way, and that is how he wants to achieve peace. Naturally, the other True Runes might have their own agendas and oppose his vision, so he goes through all the trouble of making hosts for them that he can manipulate easily. Luc was a failure, so he ended up locked in a room for what was likely to be a very long time if Leknaat hadn’t stepped in. An adult Luc with no concept of the world around him leads to an interesting line of thought, but anyhow.

Looking at the way military is so much a part of Harmonia that it’s part of the social structure, and the caste system with its slaves, I get the impression Hikusaak is a cruel person. Granted, Harmonia is an advanced, sophisticated nation and culture, but it’s a cruel one all the same. There’s no possible way for one to become first class unless one has the proper breeding and color, and even attaining second class citizenship is difficult. The only exceptions to this social structure are the church and the Howling Voice Guild, which are both harsh in their own right. If you’re not human, then forget it, you’re property. Harmonia itself is falling apart, but Hikusaak seems more concerned with gaining than seeing to what’s already his. But I ramble.

So, I’ve prattled on about my opinion concerning Hikusaak, what are yours? Please discuss. :D
