Robert's heart dropped to his stomach. He had just received a text from Jude. Normally, this would bring a smile to his face, but the way things had become between them, it only terrified him. He knew he had to read it, so he slowly opened his phone. As he read it, he felt his heart drop even lower.
"Congratulations"
That's it, nothing more. It's funny, that such a word could incite these feelings, but it did. Robert felt the sudden need to explain himself to Jude, to tell him why he'd ceased all contact. The fact of the matter was, he was scared. The feelings he had developed for Jude over the few years they'd known each other were powerful and he didn't know what to think. That one magnificent night they spent together made things all too clear for him so he did the only thing he knew to do... he ran.
Recently though, Robert had begun to miss him terribly. He knew he should have told Jude about Exton being born, but with all the responsibilities that come with bringing a new baby home, he'd overlooked it.
"Rob sweetie, are you okay? You've gone pale."
Robert looked up and saw the concerned face of his wife, Susan. "Yeah, um... hey, I think I'm gonna go see Jude."
"Oh, okay," Susan said as she straightened out his collar, "don't stay out too late." She said and smiled faintly.
He kissed his wife on the cheek and smiled before walking out the door. Susan stared after him longingly as he drove away.
When Robert pulled into the hotel, he handed his keys to the valet and walked to the front desk.
"Hello, sir. Can I help you?" The concierge smiled warmly.
"Yes, can you tell me which room Jude Law is staying in? I'm here to surprise him." Robert asked and leaned against the counter.
"Let's see, Jude.... Law" she typed as she spoke. "Ah! Here we are, Mr. Law is in room 483."
"Thank you," Robert smiled and headed for the elevator.
As the elevator climbs, Robert's heart pounds in his chest. What was he going to say to him? "Hey Jude, sorry I didn't tell you about the birth of my child, oh by the way, I think I'm in love with you and that's why I ran like a coward." He sighs.
This isn't going to be easy.
When he reaches Jude's hotel room, he knocks. No answer. He sighs and knocks again, still nothing.
"Come on, Jude, it's me. Please open the door."
Nothing.
"Jude, look... I'm... I'm really sorry okay? I was an incredible asshole and I apologize. Just, please, open the door? I need to see you."
He was about to give up when he spots a maid rolling her cart down the hall.
"Excuse me, miss?"
The maid looks up and her eyes get wide. "Oh my God, you... you're... Robert Downey, Jr.!!"
Robert smiles, this is the typical reaction he gets from fans, "Yes, I am, thank you for noticing. Listen, could you do me a favor?"
The maid nods, "yes, anything!"
"Could you..." Robert points to the door.
"Oh! Of course!" The maid shakes out of her trance and inserts her key in the lock. After the door opens, Robert smiles and nods his thanks.
He closes the door behind him and sighs, "fans..."
When Robert turns around, he expects the room to be empty. Maybe Jude was out and he could wait for him to return. Nothing could prepare him for what he saw.
Jude, lying on the bed unmoving with an empty bottle of rum and pills next to him.
"No... Jude!"
Robert runs as fast as he can to the bed and picks Jude up.
"Jude? Jude... speak to me. Come on!"
He feels tears pricking at his eyes and his heart clenches with fear. He holds his hand above Jude's mouth... he isn't breathing.
"Oh God no, NO! Jude? Judesie?"
Robert searches frantically for a pulse with tears in his eyes.
This is all my fault, I shouldn't have left him. Oh God, what have I done?
A pulse, faint but definitely there. Robert lets go the breath he was unaware he was holding in the first place and reaches for the phone.
"I'm going to get you some help, Jude. You're gonna be alright."
In his frantic reach for the phone, Robert knocks the note off the side table, leaving it on the floor unnoticed. As he dials 911, he keeps Jude's head cradled in his lap.
"911, what is the address of your emergency?"
"Yes! Please send an ambulance to the Hilton, room 483, my friend, he... he's not breathing."
"Calm down sir, I'll send an ambulance right away. In the meantime, we need to try and get him breathing. Do you know CPR?"
Robert nods and then realizing the dispatcher can't see him, answers "yes".
"Okay, start now."
He lays Jude flat and begins the steps.
One... two... three...
"Come on, COME ON! Breathe!"
Tears fill his eyes as he works and finally they start to run down his face.
One... two... three...
"Please... PLEASE! I can't lose you, oh GOD, I can't lose you!"
"Paramedics!"
Robert turns to face the door, "here! He's here!"
The paramedics run to the bed and push Robert aside to start working on Jude. Robert bites his knuckle and watches them work.
Oh God, please. Please let him be alright. Please...
The paramedics load Jude onto the stretcher and Robert follows them out, the note left on the floor.
