I just read the most intriguing article about
Thelma Schoonmaker. She's Martin Scorsese's longtime friend and editor.
And I'm so appalled by this lady. She has count 'em, three Oscars (Raging Bull, The Aviator, and The Departed) and at the same time she looks like she's a super nice grandma who bakes delicious cookies! The woman is 67 years old and works technology that I don't even understand.
I always wonder how an established editor who's used to physically cutting and splicing film on a Steenbeck suddenly go digital and jump on Avid or Final Cut. Thelma, however, uses something called a "Lightworks." I think it's a weird smoosh of a Steenbeck and an Avid. I've never heard of it. But clearly she's used to touching film. (I remember grumbling that whole semester when we were forced to edit on Steenbecks. Now I kinda look back at it and only cringe a little. It was some sort of experience. Once I spent 20 hours in the editing room scratching out parts of every single frame with a tiny screwdriver. I was young and silly and wanted my stupid little short to look like that music video "Push It" by Garabage. My hands frakking hurt!)
But her whole process with Marty is soooo intriguing. She must widdle away all of the vast amount of material (because Marty lets a lot of improvising happen on set) and after she has a cut then they sit together and watch it, taking notes on every scene (and thankfully she's a fast writer cuz Marty can talk! Lolz!) There were 15 cuts to The Departed and only 8 to The Aviator. Wow.
And of course they met at NYU. Oy. That makes me feel weird. Joe Mallozzi and Paul Mullie met at college, too. Not that they're at all in the same league as these two (ha!). Just saying. *facepalm*
inara223...when are we writing that damn spec???
And as I'm on the topic of editing already, you know what that means...vid recs! I watched these two this morning and I was really blown away. I mean these vids deliver! They're both by the same vidder,
obfreak, and they're both SGA:

Stand in the Rain is a tribute to Elizabeth Weir. Beautiful editing and great song choice. And it's extra meaningful because of everything that's happening next season. It's probably the best Weir vid I've ever seen. Well not probably. It's definitely the best Weir vid I've ever seen.

Somewhere a Clock is Ticking... This. Is. Amazing. One of the best John Sheppard vids I've ever seen. It's so powerful, so precise with the editing and the music, and it really shows us the many hidden layers of our fearless leader.
Seriously, I drool at the greatness of these vids. I even flail. *flails*
