I was nosing around on some free genealogy websites and I happened upon this page linked on the Ellis Island webpage. I'm tickled by the "occupation" column. One man, a William Bronell Esq., age 27, lists his occupation as "gentleman," and one woman, Catharine Jones, age 36, lists her occupation as "spinster."
