12. Writing sample - First Person: My friend Edgar had a little girl, Jenny. On her seventh birthday he and his wife threw a giant birthday party for her at one of the nearby parks. (According t’Edgar it was her favorite playground, but that’s actually kinda irrelevant.)

Anyway, so they spent a good deal’a time setting this party up for her kept it a secret and everything. They were tryin’ to make it out as a surprise. Now, everything pretty much went according t’plan. Their little Jenny was all excited and it was a never-ending screaming fest. And then it started rainin’. Which wasn’t much of a problem at first, since everything was under a big fancy pavilion and everything. Some of th’party games were spoiled, but Edgar distracted Jenny and her friends with presents.

And that’s when he and his wife realized they’d left the birthday cake in the car. Edgar went out to get it, but on his way back, he was only three feet away from the pavilion when he slipped and sat right on the damn thing.

Everyone thought it was funny at first, but Jenny got upset that her cake was ruined.

Now, this is the part where I come in, if you’re wonderin’.

I was th’one who made the cake in the first place, since Jenny wanted special frosting and everything. And seeing as I don’t have any kids, I was only there ‘cause Edgar wanted me t’help out with the food. (They’d originally planned a barbecue, but considering it was raining, that didn’t exactly happen).

I offered t’run home and make a new one, minus the frosting, seeing as the other cake had taken forever to decorate, but Edgar and Trina (his wife, by the way) didn’t want me to bother. They figured Jenny should, and would, get over it once she was sufficiently distracted again.

The next best solution?

Mud pies!

Everyone was already pretty wet anyway, so that wasn’t exactly an issue. And surprisingly enough Jenny and her friends took to it pretty fast. So I made some crap up on th’spot and taught them how to make the perfect mud pie and let them run off to play tea party or… whatever it was they were doin’ with Jenny’s new toys. Some of them got pretty filthy. (And I think one of the kids actually tried t’eat the mud).

So, crisis averted. And Edgar was never allowed near my cakes again. (This wasn’t the first time he’d dropped one. Go figure).
