This concordance enables one (1) to determine if a particular ghazal (lyric poem) or a tarji`band (stanzaic poem) from Mawlânâ Rûmî's Dîwân-e Kabîr (or Dîwân-e Shams-e Tabrîzî) has been translated and published in full (that is, with all the verses in the poems translated) into English, by means of the corresponding poem number from Badî`uzzamân Forûzânfar's critical Persian edition (in 10 volumes); (2) to compare different translations of the same ghazal; (3) to determine the poetic meter [vazn] of a particular ghazal or tarji`band; (4) to read a series of poems in the same meter; and (5) to evaluate the faithfulness of a ghazal or tarji`band that has been translated directly from Persian into English, into Turkish, or indirectly into English via Turkish.
The concordance lists almost all of the numbers of the ghazals and tarji`bands (except Tarj. No. 14 and Tarj. No. 29) from Forûzânfar's edition of the Dîwân. It includes all the published translations (over 2,700 poems), as well as the unpublished translations (over 550 poems) done by Nevit Ergin, M.D. in his complete translation (of GolpinarlI's complete Turkish translation). Also listed are the ghazals faithfully translated into English from Forûzânfar's edition (about 600, some translated more than once).
In spite of its deficits (such as some loss of original meanings due to going through Turkish), Dr. Ergin's complete translation is a major contribution to understanding and appreciating the poetry of the Dîwân in the English language. Unfortunately, the last part of Dr. Ergin's translation (about 3-4 volumes) has remained unpublished (the last book published, Volume 22, was in 2003). Hopefully, the remaining poems will be eventually published. For some years, there was no way to evaluate Ergin's English (and, therefore GolpinarlI's Turkish) translations because they were based on a unique manuscript from the Mevlana Museum in Konya, Turkey of the Dîwân in which all of the ghazals and tarji`bands were ordered according to 23 poetic meters, instead of the standard listing according to the alphabetical order of the ending syllables.
From 1999-2004, Susan L. Friedman, Ph.D., determined the Forûzânfar poem numbers for Meters 1-4, 6-17, and 19. She did this by comparing the first lines of Dr. Ergin's translated ghazals with the lists of first lines in the various volumes of Forûzânfar's Persian edition. Sometimes, she was able to find clusters of ghazals in the same meter; at other times, the task was more painstaking. Early on, she kindly allowed her work in progress to be published on this website. In 2003, Ibrahim Gamard determined the poem numbers for Meter 5 and for some of the (over 130) citations not found by Dr. Friedman, using a CD kindly sent by Dr. Ergin, which contained 12mm images of the Konya manuscript made into a microfilm format. Unfortunately, this proved of limited use, because the software needed to view it was difficult to use and because the images were too often out of order or duplicated. Finally, in 5/10, I. Gamard obtained from Iran a copy of the Konya manuscript of the Dîwân in two volumes edited (using modern Persian typography) by Dr. Tôfîq Sobhânî, published in 2009. He was then able to complete the missing citations, the poem numbers for Meters 18, 20-23, Mixed and Rare Meters, and Meter Remainders, and also to check all the poem numbers for accuracy.
GolpinarlI's translation (in 7 volumes, 1957-60) was based upon a special Persian edition used by the Mevlevi sufi order (by Hasan ibni `Uthmân al-Mawlawî, completed 1366-68), in which the ghazals were ordered according to 23 individual poetic meters. This edition facilitated recitations of Rumi's poetry at length using a single meter-- something difficult to do with the usual ordering of Persian divans (collected works of poets). GolpinarlI also based his translation on two other editions of the Mawlânâ's Dîwân (from the 15th and 17th century), as well as on (the beginning volumes of) the edition done by Forûzânfar (begun in 1957, completed in 1967).
