Another medical drama?
I've just watched the pilot of "Hawthorne" and I think it was pretty good. We sure don't need another medical drama, but this is from the nurses' pov and I think it has a lot of potential. The beginning was just a bomb: very good editing and rhythm. And a very suicidal DB Woodside! It was very fast and then the episode slowed down at the end with this very touching moment. All of this also showed how good Jada Pinkett Smith is. I didn't remember her in anything in particular, but I can tell you that she really rocks the boat here. She can go from super-nurse to strict, but loving mother to wounded widow. And she has her funny moments too. I also love the relationship between Christine(JPS) and her daughter. I think we'll see a lot of battles between them because she's raising her up alone and because the daughter is a teenager(who cuffed herself to vending machines because the school wanted to remove them). They both have a very strong and similar personality, something that will cause some problems,I think, but it's very clear they love each other. Their relationship isn't rocky, but it's very interesting. Moreover,I've always loved generational struggles. And....Michael Vartan is back!!!! Still handsome and all. I'd so missed him! But I have to say he doesn't have this much screentime here. At least, not in the first episode, and the chemistry with JPS is...well...it has to be explored yet,IMO. I loved him in Alias, but here he hasn't convinced me yet. I'll give him other episodes though. Because he's Micheal Vartan. Period. The supporting cast is made up of well known faces: Jillian Armenante from Judging Amy , Vanessa Langies from American Dreams, Joanna Cassidy, last seen in Heroes and the actress who plays doctor Marshall has a familiar face too. All the other nurses have some great characteristics and stories. Kelly(Langies)is tremendously cute:she's a fresh new nurse and everything seems to get ridiculously wrong for her, but she really tries hard to do her best and at the end of the episode I just wanted to hug her. Jillian Armenante's character is so funny...as usual. Bobbie,Christina's best friend, gave us one of the funniest moments in the whole stabbing scene. Moreover,I'm so gonna ship her and the paramedic because they's so cute together. Ray Stein, the only male nurse, is great as well. Poor dear! He didn't have a very good day. Another thing I like is the location: Richmond,VA. It's not something already seen and overused. Other random thoughts about the episode: How significant is that the protagonist is called Hawthorne and Vartan's character's name is Wakefield?Wakefield's candies are <3So, DB Woodside got out of 24,got a role on Private Practice and now a stint here. The same goes for James Morrison(I can't wait to see him). Do you think the people at the casting are the same?Well, that's all. It wasn't this bad as a pilot, but I really hope they'll use all this potential and not waste it in another medical drama like the other 100,000 out there.
