Oh Ignorant Westerners
Granted, I'm totally a Westerners since I grew up in the West, but since I spent part of my childhood in the East, and I was raised by people born and raised in HK...
I can't believe I fell to hipster reflex use of racist accusation to derail;

...and yes, I'm aware that the Ignorant Westerner in question is black, but that doesn't mean s/he automatically gets all racial issues especially of a people s/he is not a part of, and s/he is still being an ass, from a Western perspective, especially when s/he keeps negating the Chinese perspective in this. Oh, randomly dissing the woman who's trying to save her fiancee? Stay classy!
I'm Chinese, and most of the sources I cited in the article, are Chinese, Chinese Perspective. Surely not the perspective of all Chinese persons, but because we are Chinese, the perspective is Chinese. When I wrote that, when the Chinese sources wrote their articles and did their interview, we do so with all that is available to us within our perspective.
The derailer in question, who is Not Chinese, is offensive and disrespectful, when s/he, dumped out this gem; "The entire perspective of the story is racist. It should be focusing on the problem of a person who was wrongfully arrested when trying to help his family. Instead it's about the precious fair skinned white lady trying to save the poor Chinese from his backwards homeland"
Meaning: I (who is not Chinese) is not happy with the way you Chinese people talk about this story, it has too much white, you are not telling Chinese stories right!
By doing that, s/he tried to hijack the Chinese voice by speaking for us, that is NOT cool.
...and that gem was so full of racism I could puke, it's so stereotypical and full of ass-sumptions. Harms was NOT a stranger in a strange land by the time of the story, she's been living in China, she speaks fluent Chinese, she's using the Chinese legal system, and she was going to marry a Chinese citizen, meaning, that even though Julie Harms have white skin, she'll be Chinese.
Usually, when we use the term, Chinese...we really mean, Han-Chinese, which is a very bad thing to do, but alas, I'll just have to remember all the parts of 'Chinese' that aren't Han-...
I consider Julie Harms Chinese, she's not Han-Chinese, but at this point, she's American-Chinese, as I'm Chinese-Canadian (or she'll be Euro-Chinese, whichever she identifies as). What Julie Harms definitely is by this point, is a part of Liu Shiliang's family. Harms is spoken of here, not as a 'stranger in a strange land', because again, she's not, but as The Wife of Liu Shiliang (because she might as well be, they'll be married by now if not for this).
The title that the Chinese press gave Harms, is "Western Autumn Mums", a cultural reference to 秋菊打官司 (Autumn Mums Fight The Court), where Autumn Mums appeal to the higher court because the village leader who had maimed her husband refused to compensate them.
