potions class RP

Attired in standard faculty robes, Stephen Maturin stands behind a long table at the head of the potions classroom, waiting for the class to come to order. He is in no great hurry, but when one or two conversations trickle over into the silence that otherwise falls over the room, he gives the assembled students a look that raises a "shhh" from the ( Read more... )

Daniel found a table and waited for the rest of his groupmates to show up--he knew Janet would be in class, so he'd worn his best BDU's and cursed his lack of civilian clothing. He busied himself arranging the equipment, hoping like hell he didn't do anything stupid in front of Janet.

Nessa approached the table with a smile. She'd met at least one of her groupmates this time! "Doctor Jackson? I believe we met at your Sorting. I'm Nessarose Thropp."

"Hi," he said. He maneuvered the extra chairs out of the way, clearing a space at the table so she could move around it easily. "Have you ever taken this class before?" he asked. "I did once, and didn't understand much of it at all. Never was any good with chemistry."

"Once," Nessa replied, "but it was kind of confusing. Science was always more my sister's specialty. But this time, we just have to make a potion instead of figuring out what's in a potion, so I'll probably be marginally better at this. I hope." She didn't look very hopeful.

"Sounds like you were in the same class I was," he said. "We never did figure it out. In theory we should be okay if we follow the directions." Daniel paused. "In theory. Okay, so gloves--" he pulled his on, having a hard time believing they wouldn't shred "--and roots. How hard can this be, right?"

Janet made her way to the table, wearing her fatigues in case of a spill. She'd pulled her hair back in case flames would be involved, and was in a good mood as the atmosphere reminded her of her beloved chemistry labs as an undergrad. "Hi," she greeted Daniel, sliding in near him and planting a quick kiss on his cheek in greeting. "And hi," she said to the other people in the group, both of whom looked entirely unfamiliar to her. "I'm Dr. Janet Fraiser. Call me Janet."

Cheesy as it sounded, it could with all accuracy be said that Daniel's face lit up when Janet joined them, and he put an arm around her and gave her a light squeeze when she kissed him.

"Good, our chemist has arrived," he said. "We've just gotten started, but we're more or less flying blind."

"I sincerely doubt I'm going to be too much help. I never had to shred mandrake roots before. Shred oranges to extract aromatics, sure, but that's hardly the same." Still, she pulled on her gloves--very different feeling than her usual latex or nitrile ones, but nice--and started methodically pulling the bark off. It was a little bit unnerving since the roots looked uncannily like tiny people.

"Yeah, but it's the same principle," Daniel said, picking up a root and doing his best to peel it as well. It was kind of like shredding bark for Egyptian basket-weaving, though the mandrake bark was definitely a different texture.

"At least you weren't here for the last class," he said. "It was a zoo...we were supposed to reverse-distill the potion to see what was in it. I'm not sure anybody actually did figure it out."

She paused and considered that. "I wish I'd been here. It could have been fun. Then again, I don't see a mass spectrometer or gas chromatograph anywhere around here, so I still probably wouldn't have figured it out." She grinned, taking in all the weird smells of the ingredients. "It's going to be a good day," she muttered, mostly to herself.

"We were all supposed to do it by magic," Daniel said, laughing. "There were a lot of small explosions." He set down his mandrake and picked up another. "Though we didn't have anything that looked so much like a baby," he said, eying the thing.

He caught her last words and smiled. "You miss working in the lab?" he asked.

"Maybe it is a good thing I wasn't there. I would have probably been one of the explosions. I don't suppose you were one of them?" She pretended to look for burn marks and chuckled.

"Yeah, I do. The calculations might have been tedious, but there's something so focusing about it. And I haven't been able to do an experiment for its own sake for years now. I honestly think that trying to fine-tune tretonin was the closest I've been to it, and that wasn't exactly for fun." She finished peeling the bark off of the root and began to try and shred it with her hands. It fell apart with much more ease than she thought it would.

He laughed again. "No, we weren't one of them...well, not really, at least compared to some of the others." He'd almost finished his pile of roots--his bigger fingers were much clumsier when it came to peeling than Janet's.

"I still can't believe we're making...well, magic potions," he said, shaking his head. "I mean, I've been here over two months, and it still...it's just weird." All right, last root--now to shred. "So, uh, about Hogsmeade...we still on for tomorrow?"

((OOC: I know he sent the owl a while ago, but thanks to stupid mun issues, can we say he just sent it yesterday? XD))

She shredded the root to what she decided was acceptable levels and started on the next root. "Yeah, it's absolutely surreal to me. Just when I think I'm starting to get used to it here, a house elf will walk by or someone will do some sort of spell and I have to just stop and stare." She peeled this root faster now that she was getting familiar with how it worked.

"Yeah, I'm looking foward to it. Are we still meeting at the same time?"

((No problem!))

"And the people...aliens from universes we've never even heard of, and other dimensions," he said, picking a bit of root out from underneath his fingernail. "Takes everything we thought we knew and flips it upside down."

He reached for a mortar and started grinding up the shreds, wrinkling his nose at the smell. "Sure, we can meet in the common room, if that works for you, and head to the village. I think the Three Broomsticks has these sort of private dining rooms--have a nice dinner all to ourselves."

"And talking hats," she said wryly. "I really don't think I've seen anything that prepared me for that one."

She smiled. "That sounds really nice. I can't wait." She wondered if there were any other women about her size that wouldn't mind lending her something nice to wear. That Lily woman from her sorting had seemed nice and pretty near her size. Maybe she'd owl her after this class was over.
