Welcome the Host ((application, Lorne, Angel season 5))

A somewhat confused demon stood in the middle of the Sorting Room. His brilliant green skin, red horns and eyes contrasted sharply with the well tailored pale blue shirt and lemon yellow suit that he wore. He looked around and groaned. “Jumping Judas on a pogo stick, a castle? Isn’t this all a little, you know, cliché? I swear if the Powers sent me ( Read more... )

Kurama paused by the door, his guitar slung over one shoulder. He'd been on his way to the great hall, but the smell of demon and the few words he'd caught gave him pause. "Music-based aura reading?" he asked, intrigued. "That's not an off the shelf ability. Where'd you come by that talent?"

"Ah, a fellow music lover," he said, brightening at the sight of the guitar. "I came by it back home on Pylea. Empathic skill and all with a little boost from the Powers to help push their Champions back on the right trail. I use it for other people too, help them find their way."

He chuckled, "And it could've been worse, it could have been readings based on tapdancing or powers help us, interpretative dance."

He threw back his head and laughed at the last remark. "Preserve us from the sixth art," he chuckled, shaking his head. "Still, that's a very impressive skill. It's rare that a demon works as a morale booster for a team, at least where I'm from." He held out a hand to introduce himself. "Kurama."

"Oh honey, you aren't kidding. Give me a good song, and maybe a little dance, but a lot of it? No thank you." Lorne shook his hand, "Lorne. Good to meet you."

"It's a bit of an empathic gift my people have, and it got a boost from the Powers that Be to turn me into the big green signpost on the road for their chosen Champions. And it's kinda nice to be useful, you know?"

"Usefulness is the most lauded of virtues, where I come from. Though 'use' in that sense has many and varied interpretations." He thought a moment. "Is it just singing, or," he gestured to the guitar, "is playing covered?"

"Better than just sitting around and waiting for the end of the world. And I'm a singer not a fighter. Well, not much," he admitted. There were more than a few tangles he got into when the threw his lot in with Angel and Co.

"Afraid it's just singing my very tall friend. Music bares the soul, but there's some added zing that singing gives it to help with the reading when someone's looking to find the right path."

"Ah," he set his guitar down, leaning it against the wall. He didn't have to brag about his voice; he just happened to have a gorgeous one*. "In that case, any requests, or should I just sing whatever comes to mind?" Not that he really needed a divination, but in the name of research, he was willing to play along.

((*seeing as his voice actors for both human and demon forms are pop stars...))

"Whatever comes to mind is just fine. The song itself doesn't matter as much as the soul behind it. As long as it holds some meaning for you, fire away."

He might have picked something more modern and recognizable, but the first song that sprang to mind was an old Kitsune lullaby. The words were more than a little bit morbid, but thankfully the dialect was old enough for him to have heard as a kit, and the translation charm didn't quite cover it. He put his head to one side once he finished. "I can't believe I even remembered the words for that," he mused.

"The heart always remembers music, even long after the mind thinks it's forgotten it."

The images were a little tricky to sort through, but Lorne gave it a moment before he spoke. "So, a voyage of self-discovery is it? I've gotta give you credit for that, most people can barely make it through one, much less a couple of them. Stick to your path, Inari put your fox feet there for a reason.

"And stick close to your better half there. Something's heading down that path at you. I'd give you more details if I could, but it's clouded from even me. It's not 'holy mother of us all we're all gonna die' bad, but it might get a little tricky."

Kurama flushed slightly at that 'better half' comment, and scratched behind an ear. "He keeps me out of more trouble than I know," he admitted. "The rest of it, though, thank you. It wouldn't be right if things didn't go all wahoonie shaped every so often here, but it's good to have a heads up." He smiled then, and crossed his arms. "Now to sort you. You seem like a Hufflepuff or a Gryffindor to me, unless you have a preference?"

Lorne grinned easily, “I think that’s the predominant job of most better halves. Keeping the other one on the straight and narrow so to speak. And just how sideways to things tend to get here? Not too awful, I hope. God knows I saw enough of that already,” he muttered.

“You know this place better than I do. I suppose Gryffindor if you think there’s a fair amount of hero-types that need guidance.”
