"Are you a droid?" If so, she was a very advanced one, but droids designed to mimic humans weren't unheard of in Tenel Ka's universe. The way Claire spoke made her think of a medical droid, with how she was programmed, and a code name.

The other explanation was that she was human, but Tenel Ka hoped that wasn't the case. Brainwashing was not uncommon in her galaxy, either.

"Droid - as in android?" Claire shook her head, brow furrowed. "No, we don't deal in that kind of technology, to my knowledge. Though another department might, for all I know. I'm - a real person."

"An android, yes. I understand that such technology has not been reached on this world, but I was not sure if this is your home planet." The teenage Jedi said this with her usual solemn delivery.

"Are you a victim of brainwashing or outside mental controls?"

Claire stifled the impulse to laugh. "It's the only planet I've got," she said lightly.

"Outside mental controls? No, we don't have that capacity...yet. Brainwashing is not a bad term for the treatment I underwent. Victim, less so, possibly." She touched the scars on her face. "They thought they were fixing me. Making me whole again, after this. Maybe I've got ethical qualms about how they went about it, but from their point of view, who am I to complain?"

"Ah. Aha." She raised the stump of her left arm. "Sometimes what is prescribed is not what the patient wishes? I have had experience with that."

She bowed. "My name is Tenel Ka, and I am from the planet Dathomir, which is in a galaxy that is unknown to this world. I am happy that you have this planet. I have no other to call home right now."

"At the time I was in no condition to quibble. The damage to my face was nothing to what it did to my mind. Besides, there are advantages to my current state."

The next person Alpha scarred up got his face fixed, and was sent right back out on engagements. She might have to live with the knowledge of what happened, but at least she got to be herself.

She bowed back. "Claire Saunders. I'm, ah, happy you have this planet too."

"What did this person do to you?" Tenel Ka was nothing if not painfully blunt. "Is this the person who made you undergo treatment?"

"No. He was in love with a - coworker - and he wanted her to have Whiskey's status, 'the best.' So to, to impress her I guess, he did -" She patted the scar on her cheek. "They couldn't send Whiskey out to deal with customers with these. And I - she had no mental resources to draw on, actives are very simple and sheltered between engagements, so the attack just shattered her."

Claire looked down at her hands. "He killed a lot of people who tried to subdue him before getting away, including our doctor, so our employers solved two problems at once. They created a new persona based on the original Dr. Saunders and gave Whiskey a permanent imprint. Save Whiskey's mental health, and provide themselves with a new, incredibly devoted doctor. It worked too, up to a certain point. But they let me believe I'd always been Claire Saunders, and when the truth came out - It's been hard to live with the idea that they made me up out of whole cloth."

That sounded like a regular bad day in the Star Wars EU. "You do not consider yourself to be Whiskey now?" she asked. "Do you think of her as dead?"

Claire paused to consider the question.

"I think I think of her as a part of me," she said finally. "A part that's buried, deep in the foundation of Claire Saunders. Since rationally I have to recognize that my occupancy of this body could be taken away from me at my employers' whim, I guess I think of her as waiting."
