[application] Kameo (Kameo: Elements Of Power)

Aug 04, 2009 16:58

Kameo didn't feel well. Something just...wasn't right. This place confused her. Magic was afoot, but it didn't resemble the magic back at the Enchanted Kingdom. And for some reason or another, she had to take a quiz.

Said quiz. )

An ankh? Octavian knew that symbol.

"Have you been traveling in Egypt?" he inquired politely of the new arrival.

"N--no, It's just a necklace," she answered. One could not seriously expect a princess to be without decoration; it was coincidence that Egypt and the Enchanted Kingdom produced a similar design. Still, Kameo had to wonder what this guy was talking about. Was 'Egypt' a neighboring territory? Entirely possible, considering the elf still didn't know where she was. "What's...Egypt?" she asked naively.

Octavian blinked. Had not everyone heard of that empire? Ah -- but Hogwarts had persons from other worlds ...

"Egypt," he said, matter-of-factly, "is an empire known to the peoples of Earth, within the window of a few millennia. If you are of a different world or time, you will not be familiar with it." He knew better than to make assumptions, and he felt he had committed an error in so doing. "Where did your necklace originate?"

Kameo more or less ignored the nonsense about Earth and different worlds. Maybe she'd understand later.

"I think I just bought it," she admitted, passing the necklace to her other hand. "I'm from a royal family,. Kameo added, to explain where she got the money.

Octavian nodded. He would have asked her what provenance the appraiser had cited for the piece, but in Octavian's Rome, women of the higher social classes did not do their own shopping. Slaves did the shopping for them. Even when it came to jewelry, the merchandise would be brought to the house for the ladies to try on and examine, but slaves did the actual bargaining.

Also, his mun played a videogame character as well, and knew what a pain in the derriere it could be to make up explanations for videogame trappings.

"I am from Rome. We have no kingship there." He tried to keep it simple for her sake. "No royal family, you see. There are client kings, rulers of subject territories that pay tribute to Rome; so I am acquainted with royalty." Cleopatra of Egypt had once attended one of his mother's parties, quite memorably ... "You will find other royals here at Hogwarts as well, and others of high birth who are not royal."

Kameo mentally translated that...in terms of the Enchanted Kingdom, it would be as if Solon never existed, and the tribes each had a king of their own.

"This is a lot to take in," the elf complained. Being shoved into a new realm with new vocabulary could be disorienting. She rubbed her forehead, befuddled. "Hogwarts is this place's name? Strange," she commented. That sounded like a disease, not a location.

The young patrician nodded again. "A period of disorientation is natural. Don't worry," he added, "no one will count it against you." He offered a slight smile. "I am Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, called Octavian. I am a son of the Julii, aged eighteen years, and my uncle's full legal heir. From what royal family do you spring, and what are you called?"

"Hello then, Octavian," she greeted him with a nod. "I'd tell you my last name, but it doesn't matter since we're always referred to by first name."

She shifted her weight to her other foot, and continued. "I'm Kameo. I'm the daughter of Queen Theena, and..." Pause, regain train of thought. "...the next in line for the throne. My family rules over the Enchanted Kingdom, but it's not much actually." She looked away nervously at that. The Enchanted Kingdom used to be larger, but now it was about the size of Vatican City.

Octavian read a world of political peril into that nervous look. "I imagine you have plans for the Enchanted Kingdom," he said, almost reassuringly. "Consider your time here as an opportunity to formulate strategies and build your own strengths."

"Oh, I will," Kameo replied with a nod. The sheer diversity of 'Hogwarts' suggested that another Elemental Warrior, or something close to it, could be found. Now that Thorn was gone, the Enchanted Kingdom would have time to regain some land. "There's no danger here, is there?" the elf asked. Yes or no, it wouldn't be a problem.

"You cannot be killed here. An enchantment prevents it. Apart from that, the dangers that plague mankind everywhere are to be found here. Infer that you are not in paradise. That is a good thing: it means you're not dead." Octavian's idea of humor was dryer and colder than most.

That didn't make a lot of sense to Kameo, and she employed the same strategy as when the Mystic tried to be cryptic: ignore it. However, the no-killing enchantment sparked her interest. "I can't be killed? Wow," the elf breathed, intrigued.

((oh, LJ. I'm only just now getting notifications from this afternoon.))

Octavian gave a grave nod. "Injuries can be incurred. They simply don't cause death, no matter how severe the wound. Because everyone knows this, there is not much incentive to engage in physical combat, and people tend to work out their differences in other ways."

'Arguing' by force was Kameo's specialty. She'd killed many trolls, had rescued her ancestors by destroying legendary creatures, and beat up Thorn to to get him to stop attacking. Still, as a royal, she had diplomacy skills--just not the ones, say, Theena did. The elf put her hands on her hips. "I suppose I'll have to get used to that," she mused, then changed the subject: "There's something about houses here...can you explain?" She scratched her head at that.

"I can describe them. Explanation is another matter, if you expect explanations to make sense. The plain truth is that Hogwarts doesn't make much sense. Gryffindor is a house for the brave, Ravenclaw for the studious, Hufflepuff for the loyal, Slytherin for the ambitious. The creature that does the Sorting has its own ideas, however. Your favorite cheese may matter more than all the loyalty or ambition in the world." Octavian shrugged. "Ultimately, all it means is that your quarters are located in a particular part of the fortress."

Er, okay. Kameo blinked and stared blankly before replying. "I think I get it now," the elf responded, more quietly than normal. Fortress, huh...

"What about Sparklypoo?" Kameo continued. "She mentioned it," the elf said, pointing a thumb at Sage. All she knew was that it had fondue.
