Application : Elrond (Lord of the Rings)

((Elrond apped with permission by the other LotR muns. He's got pretty mad powers, but, they're of a subtle nature. He's somewhere below Glorfindel in power, but above the average elf, and has one of the Three Rings of the Elves, Vilya, the Ring of Air. What Vilya specifically does isn't mentioned anywhere I'm aware of, but, it seems reasonable to ( Read more... )

Kaga smiled. "An answer I can agree with, the first one."

Elrond turned to the man, offering a slight but friendly smile. He was not dressed like any humans that Elrond had ever seen, but, this did not phase him. However, it did suggest that he was not in Rivendell anymore. This did not bother him too badly- it was strange and inexplicable, but, Elrond was the sort to approach situations calmly.

"Well met, sir. I am afraid that I am unsure where I am. Perhaps you could enlighten me?"

"This is known as Hogwarts. It's a school for wizardry and witchcraft."

Hogwarts? That sounded like another Shire name, but, this did not look like Shire construction, and Kaga was clearly not a halfling. "Forgive my ignorance, but, where is Hogwarts? I have never heard of it, and, was expecting to find a familiar corridor of my own house. Instead, I found this room."

"I agree! Everything's easier if you have friends to help you!"

Elrond was becoming more curious about his surroundings- he had not heard of a race of talking flowers before. But, he was familiar with Ents, the tree folk, and so a flower was not too surprising.

"Do you know what this place is?" He gave Sunflora a subdued, but kind smile. "It is not anywhere I have been before, and I do not know how I came here."

"This is Hogwarts! It's a magic school. There are a lot of humans here!" This was weird to Sunflora.

Elrond was quite familiar with Men, but, not with magic schools. Elven magic wasn't taught in any schools. It was just part of their life and their way, like all other Elven knowledge. "What sort of magic does this Hogwarts teach?" He was starting to feel sure that somehow, he'd turned a corner in his own house and ended up very far away.

Damned álfar. The ljósálfar, the svartálfar, both were a pain in the everloving Ás' ass.

Mr. Wednesday couldn't bring himself to dislike the guy too strongly. He felt like home, in a way. But all this Illuvatar stuff, argh.

"When you say you're versed in ancient runes," he said without ceremony, "you're talking elvish runes, I take it." Good for maps and secret writing, ooooh. Not the kind of runes Wednesday used, for the most part. Not the kind you had to hang on a tree for nine nights, sacrificed to yourself, in order to learn.

Elrond could sense an interesting presence from this Man. In some way, he was reminded of Gandalf. There was an ancient sense of wisdom there, something in the eyes that ran deeper than in most Men, who saw but few seasons in their fleeting lives. But at the same time, he was very unfamiliar.

"Elvish runes of course, but also Dwarven." The Dwarves too had a rich ancient tradition, but they didn't have to hang themselves on trees, either. "It sounds as if you are familiar with the runes as well?"

((hark, a teal deer approacheth))Twisted as the World Tree, the old god's smile. Familiar with the runes? Best not to go into the Enumeration of Runes here and now. The elf would have to take Mr. Wednesday's word for it, unless he wanted a Display of Godliness. Familiar with the runes, yes. "You could say that," he agreed jovially. He was perfectly at ease, our Mr. Wednesday: suave in his Armani suit, well-groomed and shaven, and the eye he'd paid for wisdom could've been there in the flesh, so convincing was his glass prosthesis. Eyepatches just did not do, these days. Too piratical, too memorable ( ... )

This Man, if that was what he was, was dressed strangely, but yet that touch of familiarity was hard to shake off. Somehow, Elrond kept being reminded of another. . .no, others- it wasn't necessarily Gandalf specifically that he was reminded of. There were touches of others there, ragged old Radagast, Saruman prior to recent incidents. . . it was a general sort of Istari-ness. It was very difficult for Elrond not to envision Wednesday as a wizard. And so, it was easy to see the truth in his words, and accept that he was aware of the runes. There was no way he could have known that he was dealing with the granddaddy of the entire Istari archetype ( ... )

It was Asfaloth who found the Lord of Imladris first, having abruptly veered away from where Glorfindel was leading him down the corridor. Trotting into the Sorting Room, the white horse greeted Elrond with an enthusiastic whicker and toss of his head, causing the little ornamental bells on his headstall and reins to ring. A very startled Glorfindel appeared in the doorway a moment later, and his expression immediately brightened upon seeing Elrond, of all people, standing in the very place he himself had appeared barely a few days ago.

"Master Elrond! Now I understand my dear Asfaloth's disobedience," he said, naturally addressing his old friend in Elvish which the player isn't going to attempt writing out at the moment. He was laughing as he made his way over to them both, and lightly stroked his steed's neck while taking in Elrond's appearance. He seemed well and whole, to Glorfindel's immense relief, and yet something about him was decidedly different. Changed ( ... )

Elrond turned at the sound of clattering hooves and jingling bells, and his surprise and joy at seeing the very person he had been seeking counsel from just before his arrival at the Sorting Room was evidenced by his sudden smile. It was a bit of a shock to see a familiar face in this unfamiliar new place, but, Glorfindel was Elrond's dearest friend and confidant and he found comfort in his presence here. It was truly him, and not some illusion, of that he had no doubt- he was certain that he would have easily detected any falseness, but there was something ever so slightly different.

He moved to meet Glorfindel, and opened his arms to embrace his friend. "Glorfindel! Mae Govannen!" He too spoke Elvish, and his mun wasn't about to try translating now either. "How is it that I find you here, when only a short time ago, we were both surely in Imladris?" And Legolas here? But he had been sent off with the Nine on a pivotal errand. Yet, Glorfindel did not seem to be worried. What was going on here? He was pleased to see that Glorfindel ( ... )

He gladly embraced Elrond, allowing his hand to linger on his friend's shoulder as he pulled away, still smiling while Elrond spoke. "I was in fact returning to Imladris from the errand you'd sent me on when I appeared here quite unexpectedly," he explained, his brows knitting together in confusion as his expression steadily fell. "The Ringbearer...?"

He instinctively glanced toward the Ring of Power that Elrond kept. And there it was, on his finger, the very thing which Glorfindel had sensed was different-not changed, but rather unchanged. Vilya yet retained its full potency, that much was clear. He looked up, plainly startled ( ... )

Elrond was somewhat perplexed, despite his relief at finding his dear friend in this unanticipated place. Glorfindel returning to Imladris? But he was already there, or at least he thought he was. He had not recalled any errands since the incident with Frodo at the ford. He wondered why Glorfindel was glancing at his ring, and his own eyes subconsciously turned to the gemmed band, unsure why it should be the focus of his attention ( ... )

"You are familiar with magic already? How wonderful, I wish I had a background in that myself." The bent, hobbit-like man smiled.

"Who is this 'Dark Lord' you mention? Does he practice the Dark Arts? You know, they won't teach those here." Igor sighed. "No proper machinery either, but other than that, this is a wonderful place. Do you need anything?"

Elrond looked down at the strange, somewhat Gollum-esque little man. He didn't miss the disappointment at the fact that Dark Arts apparently weren't encouraged here. And he didn't like that much. Elves weren't a rude people, but neither were they dishonest.

"Yes, the Dark Lord, Sauron, practices dark arts. His ways are not the ways of my people, or of any free person. I would think that not teaching such ways is a good thing." Those who followed his ways were corrupt and twisted from what they should have been, such as the Orcs, said to have once been Elves, but twisted by Melkor, Sauron's once-Master. So Elrond was suspicious of this Gollumish person. "I thank you for the offer, but, I believe I will need to learn where I am before I learn what I will need."

Seeing the man's suspicious look, Igor spoke politely, ready to back away if his presence offended.
"Really, I can't be a judge of the Dark Arts, since I've never heard of them before recently. I always thought learning everything you could was important, but you're probably right."

"You are at Hogwarts, a school of magic, by the way."

"There are some things that it is better not to learn." Elrond spoke quietly, and said it as a simple statement, not carrying any specific accusation. "A magic school. . . it is a strange idea." He looked around, still unable to fathom this particular idea. The thought that magic could be parceled out and taught according to some specific system seemed to defy the nature of magic as he knew it. "Where I come from, magic is not taught in schools." His tone was not judgmental, merely observational. He had not seen enough to make judgments of Hogwarts yet, and Elves were not inclined to swift decisions.
