Application : Elrond (Lord of the Rings)

((Elrond apped with permission by the other LotR muns. He's got pretty mad powers, but, they're of a subtle nature. He's somewhere below Glorfindel in power, but above the average elf, and has one of the Three Rings of the Elves, Vilya, the Ring of Air. What Vilya specifically does isn't mentioned anywhere I'm aware of, but, it seems reasonable to ( Read more... )

"You are familiar with magic already? How wonderful, I wish I had a background in that myself." The bent, hobbit-like man smiled.

"Who is this 'Dark Lord' you mention? Does he practice the Dark Arts? You know, they won't teach those here." Igor sighed. "No proper machinery either, but other than that, this is a wonderful place. Do you need anything?"

Elrond looked down at the strange, somewhat Gollum-esque little man. He didn't miss the disappointment at the fact that Dark Arts apparently weren't encouraged here. And he didn't like that much. Elves weren't a rude people, but neither were they dishonest.

"Yes, the Dark Lord, Sauron, practices dark arts. His ways are not the ways of my people, or of any free person. I would think that not teaching such ways is a good thing." Those who followed his ways were corrupt and twisted from what they should have been, such as the Orcs, said to have once been Elves, but twisted by Melkor, Sauron's once-Master. So Elrond was suspicious of this Gollumish person. "I thank you for the offer, but, I believe I will need to learn where I am before I learn what I will need."

Seeing the man's suspicious look, Igor spoke politely, ready to back away if his presence offended.
"Really, I can't be a judge of the Dark Arts, since I've never heard of them before recently. I always thought learning everything you could was important, but you're probably right."

"You are at Hogwarts, a school of magic, by the way."

"There are some things that it is better not to learn." Elrond spoke quietly, and said it as a simple statement, not carrying any specific accusation. "A magic school. . . it is a strange idea." He looked around, still unable to fathom this particular idea. The thought that magic could be parceled out and taught according to some specific system seemed to defy the nature of magic as he knew it. "Where I come from, magic is not taught in schools." His tone was not judgmental, merely observational. He had not seen enough to make judgments of Hogwarts yet, and Elves were not inclined to swift decisions.

The concept of "things man was not meant to know" was somewhat foriegn to Igor, but he nodded seriously. "You are self-taught then." The man became that much more impressive in Igor's eyes. "I have not attended many classes, but they leave us to figure out many things for ourselves. We are also divided into four houses- the intelligent, the ambitious, the brave, and the loyal are sorted by a...mildly eccentric hat. There may be other houses, but I don't know anything about those." He caught his breath after the unusually long speech.

"Self taught?" He considered, and again shook his head. "No, I have had the guidance of many, but, we do not have 'schools' in the fashion of Men. We learn from our ancestors, and we learn from the world itself. Surely, magic is a gift of the Valar, at least in my world." He wondered if there were even Valar in this one. He found it hard to concieve of anywhere without them. At least there had to be Illuvatar?

He tried to understand Igor's explanation about houses. How could a hat sort people? Why would it sort people? Sorting sounded very cold and impersonal. "What purpose do these houses serve, do you know?" He may have been assured that Hogwarts wasn't a prison, but, 'sorting' sounded like something done in one.

ah. Tutored, then. "I've heard these 'Valar' mentioned by one other person here. His name was Glorfindel. Perhaps you know him?" Come to think of it, they looked a lot alike, though Glorfindel seemed somehow more superhuman.

"As for houses, I suppose it's for organization. The groups live in different places, but otherwise they're free to move as they like. I've even been to see Ravenclaw's lab.
Maybe it has to do with sport as well. Each house has its own colors and its own team, or so I've heard."

Elrond nodded his confirmation of Igor's deduction. "I know Glorfindel well. He is one of my oldest, most beloved friends. Hogwarts will be more bearable with his presence, although I am sure that we would both rather be in our own realm."

He listened quietly to the explanation about houses, and nodded slightly. "It makes sense to have houses if there is to be some sort of sportsman-like competition here. But, I know little about schools, so, perhaps there are other reasons too." He smiled thankfully at the strange-looking little man- although his initial comment about the dark arts may have been a bit unfortunate, Elrond sense that this was not a being with ill will. He just might have a tendency to be indiscriminately helpful.

Igor smiled "I've only met him once. He is new here also. And he is 'elven' he says.
You'll probably have to stay here until you are placed in a house, so do you mind if I go ahead and vote? What is your preference? The loyal are placed in Hufflepuff (my own house), the brave in Griffindor, the wise in Ravenclaw, and the cunning in Slytheryn."
He tilted his head. "I voted for your friend to go into Griffindor- maybe you would like to join him?"

"We are both Elves, although I share the blood of the Men as well. I am Elrond Half-Elven." He listened to Igor's descriptions of the Houses, but, the only qualification that mattered to him was the one that Glorfindel was placed in. If he was to be here, he'd rather have a trusted comrade close. "If I was to have a choice, I would choose to be wherever Glorfindel is. So I would be grateful for that." Elrond was starting to hope this strange process would be over soon, so that he could see a bit more of Hogwarts than a single room.

"I believe he finally went to Griffendor, though if he did not, there's no problem. You may stay wherever you wish, regardless of you official House."

"Ideally, this Sorting rite will place me with friends, but that is good to know." Elrond sensed that this little man had a good heart and sought to be helpful, despite his initial remarks of interest in questionable subjects. He was feeling less suspicious of him now, and managed a thankful smile. "I am grateful for the assistance. May I know your name?"

He smiled. "I'm Igor. I work at the hospital wing, along with Severus Snape and Dr. Hook."

"So you are a healer, then?" Elrond smiled. It was a good thing to be- unfortunately, healers were one thing that there never seemed to be quite enough of. "I am a healer as well. I have not met these other two healers, but, perhaps I will be able soon."

"A healer among other things." Igor answered. "Snape is the Potions Master and Dr. Hook is the muggle doctor. If you are curious, the hospital wing is often open."

"I would be very interested in stopping by." He smiled and inclined his head thankfully. "What is a 'muggle' It is a word which i have not heard before." He wondered how it was that he could understand all those he was speaking with, who surely couldn't have known the Elvish tongue. Yet, he was sure he was speaking it, and felt as if he was being spoken to in it. But he was not so sure- this had to be some magic. Strong magic seemed to cling to the place, when he felt for its presence, but magic different from that which he was familiar with.
