"Side dishes mostly, if we have a specialty cook come in. I do most of the daily cooking. I'm not that good at anything non-local though," she said, looking off to the side in embarrassment at the last part.

"A...school? How'd I end up in a school?" Mai asked in surprise. Then she added quietly, "Do you think they'd let me?" Mai loved to cook. When she cooked, she didn't have to worry about anything besides making the food taste good, which was a joy in and of itself.

...only a few seconds? So she was in a coma? That made more sense than the other possibilities. She'd probably wake up in a few minutes. Or...what if it seemed longer? What if...what if this had happened before, and she just didn't remember? She'd been 'close to death' enough, and it was almost like being in a light coma sometimes....

"What...kind of classes do they have here?"
