"Thanks!" Mai smiled real big. "I work as a maid, so I've been taught to prepare lots of dishes!"

[gourmetchairman]

"Really, what sort of dishes?"

[notapotato]

"Side dishes mostly, if we have a specialty cook come in. I do most of the daily cooking. I'm not that good at anything non-local though," she said, looking off to the side in embarrassment at the last part.

[gourmetchairman]

"Well, you're at a school now, with plenty of free time. You could learn," the Chairman said softly.

"A...school? How'd I end up in a school?" Mai asked in surprise. Then she added quietly, "Do you think they'd let me?" Mai loved to cook. When she cooked, she didn't have to worry about anything besides making the food taste good, which was a joy in and of itself.

"I can count on one hand the people that were turned away. Your chances of staying are good."

Mai smiled. "I'll...I'll try my best then!" Wait, no, she couldn't stay...Kaede would kill her!

"Um...actually...I think I need to go. My, uh, my boss wouldn't like me staying here."

"Well, for some people, what they told me, when they went back to where they came from, it was as if only seconds had passed. Surely you can spare a few seconds away from home."

...only a few seconds? So she was in a coma? That made more sense than the other possibilities. She'd probably wake up in a few minutes. Or...what if it seemed longer? What if...what if this had happened before, and she just didn't remember? She'd been 'close to death' enough, and it was almost like being in a light coma sometimes....

"What...kind of classes do they have here?"

"Classes on how to tell the future, and about plants, and how to use certain spells."

"Tell the......uuuaaah?" Yep, she's looking at him slack-jawed now.

"Well, somewhat. The professor could explain better than I could about his class. I'm just a student."
