"I have no need for baubles, ser," the maid of Tarth said coldly. "Why should I give you my leave to stay in this place if you wish only to cause destruction?"

"Destruction," Smaug repeated carefully, as though tasting the word, and tilted his head to peer down at the woman. And no common maiden was this; she possessed the unmistakable bearing of a warrior. Knight, perhaps. Of course baubles would be useless to her.

Dark smoke curled from the dragon's nostrils. "If none trouble me, Lady, then none shall I trouble in turn."

It was a shade of the truth.

"Fair enough," Brienne conceded. "Do you intend, then, to study magic?" The dragons of House Targaryen did not, as she recalled, have a yen for learning, and so she was finding it hard to believe this dragon would, either.

"Indeed... magic. It permeates every stone here. Why else should I come to this place, if not to study it."

He'd inferred that was the purpose of this castle, and though learning magic certainly hadn't been his original intent, he did think it an interesting prospect now. They would willingly impart their secrets to a dragon?

"The whims of the Sorting Hat are capricious," Brienne answered. "I don't know whether you will be allowed to remain here or not, but I think it quite likely. As for magical secrets, you would have to attend classes to learn any, and those don't happen all that often."

"I would find this arrangement agreeable," Smaug replied, sounding maybe even a little amiable. Certainly not like the sort of dragon who had razed the town of Dale to the ground and taken Erebor by force. And he had been young, then...

He shifted his wings back as he settled onto the floor comfortably, forelegs tucked against his chest. He looked for all intents and purposes like a great, scaly cat.

"You've no interest in gems or gold. What then might you ask of me?"

Brienne considered that. Yes, the dragon did seem much more amiable, but she wasn't about to trust him at the moment.

"Well, I suppose I could actually make use of some of your scales," she conceded. "They would work well to enhance armor."

"No weapon will rend them, save perhaps my own claws," Smaug said, running his talons down the side of his neck to loosen old scales. "Invulnerable to fire and many ill enchantments as well, naturally."

He offered Brienne the scales. They were bright gold with a red iridescence, like mirrored sunsets.

Brienne took the offered scales carefully. "My thanks," she said, and then cast her vote. They really would be a lovely addition to her armor, and they'd... well... look good, too.
