It was a test, really, to see if he could look at Matt's name on the plaque. As he was approaching, an owl came up to him bearing a letter. He stood to the side of the hall, just around the corner from the popcorn room, holding the note between his thumbs and index fingers, reading quickly. Once through didn't make a lot of sense. He read it again. Why would B want them to go to the popcorn room?
He went around the corner, the note shoved into his pocket along with a hand, the other hand, thumb to his mouth. He slouched, partially an attempt to look harmless, partially because he was so used to standing and moving that way he moved better, if he needed to defend himself.
What he saw, though, he had no defense for.
"Matt," he said, his voice bland, calm. He felt anything but.
Well, that was something. Matt wouldn't have known his name, that name or any of them by sight, if he'd forgotten everything. "What do you remember?" L asked, keeping his emotions out of his voice. Hope is too much. Dread too close. Chaos would be the best word for his mental state.
"Some things. I know you and Mello and Near are here. I remember working on runes. I know you and I were close." He sighed. "How close I can't say."
He ran a hand through his hair. "I remember working on something on my computer. Then I found myself here. Mello said weeks passed. Is...is that true?"
L shoved his other hand into his pocket. "Yes, it has been weeks." He should be able to pinpoint it better than that, but he lost track of time. He looks at the wall next to Matt, only watching the redhead out of the corner of his eyes. "We shared a room," he said, not quite sure if it was loud enough to carry to Matt.
Did he want to? Did he still love Matt? He might have nodded, possibly, a shadow of that movement. "It's more if you want to," L said aloud. He couldn't force Matt to love him again, wouldn't.
"Neither do I," L whispered, more of a confession that he had anticipated. "We'll figure out what you remember and I'll remind you of the rest," he said, a little louder. He shuffled his feet a little. "I put most of your things in storage," his voice carried with it a hint of pain. "But, when you're ready, we'll get them out again."
L followed. "I did. I...didn't know if you were coming back." His thumb found its way to his mouth again. "It hurt...I missed you." Both were delivered so softly, there might be some doubt if they would have been heard.
"I wish I could say the same, Ryuzaki, I really do. But as far as I know, one minute I'm at my computer, the next I'm here, Mello yelling at me, weeks past and memories missing."
L stepped forward a little, taking the lead, his hand leaving his pocket as if it were going to reach for Matt. He let it hang at his side. "There isn't any real information on popcorning."
He stopped suddenly, remembering. Turning, he asked, "Do you remember your dog?"
L startled a little when Matt took his hand, but his fingers curled around Matt's before he could move away. "I kept him." He started walking again. "Well, more the house elves took care of him and he stayed in the room with me."
He went around the corner, the note shoved into his pocket along with a hand, the other hand, thumb to his mouth. He slouched, partially an attempt to look harmless, partially because he was so used to standing and moving that way he moved better, if he needed to defend himself.

Matt dragged on his cigarette.
They were close. He remembered that much. How close? He didn't know that. Were they just as close friends as he and Mello were? Brotherly? Lovers?
Matt didn't remember.

"I see." He couldn't quite look at L.
"Do you still want to?"

If it had been anyone else, he would have ignored the gesture in favor of something else.
With Ryuzaki, though...it just felt right. As if his body still remembered, even if his mind didn't.
As he reached to take L's hand, he said, "I remember Koopa."
