((First cut leads to an explanation on where Brice and Lola were and why Mel is in the dark about it (WARNING: very lengthy), and the other is an invite to go say hi to the pondering angel boy. =) ))
Rose went out to paint the lake, but the boy looking worried is a better subject. When he moves slightly, Rose's fierce little voice pipes up. 'Please do not move. You will mess it up. Thank you.'
A few seconds pass, sounds of sketching in the air, til she concedes that 'Now, you may move.'
'You look like a tormented soul and there are far too few of them here for my liking,' she replies, innocence on her face. 'What has happened? And can I see your eyes wider, please?'
"Nothing's happened," said Brice a touch defensively. "I'm just thinking about something. And I don't do wide-eyed wonderment, sorry. You'll have to make do with what's there."
'So I can see what colour they are,' Rose replies patiently, eternally refusing to wear her glasses. 'If I wanted wide eyes I would find a new person in the Sorting Room. What are you thinking about?' Her eyes fall on the little blur in his hands, and she frowns, recognising the way he holds it. 'Is that a ring?'
"Look closer, then," said Brice, leaning towards her so she could get a good look at his eyes. He liked kids well enough so he humoured her. Kids should have some spunk to them, he felt.
The angel nodded. "It's a ring. That's what I'm thinking about. I'm asking my girlfriend to marry me."
He looked at her to see if she was serious. She seemed to be. Too young for sarcasm, maybe.
"Yeah, that was the plan. Can't exactly know unless I ask. But I want to make sure I do it right, so she'll say yes." Lose the ring? Impossible, the way Brice was keeping an eye on that baby.
'If she loves you, she probably will no matter how you ask,' Rose says. 'Even if you pat her brother's bottom sometimes. That was what one of Caddy's boyfriends did to Indigo,' she supplies so that he isn't enraged at the accusation. 'Unless you've been very stupid recently. Have you?'
Well, what counted as very stupid, really? The last very stupid thing he'd done was to confuse Mel for Maia, but that had been a while ago and he was pretty sure Mel had forgiven him for that. Well, sort of, anyway.
"I don't think so," he said, frowning in thought. "Not recently, anyway. And she doesn't have a brother whose bottom I could pat," he added as an afterthought. Yes, count your blessings.
"How's the painting going, kiddo?" he asked, to fill the silence.
Handling the proposal so she thinks you're cheating on her with your ex counts as a bit stupid, but it's the muns' fault, not Brice's.
Rose turns the picture to him, and it's like looking in a moody, moping half-coloured in mirror. 'Then she should say yes. I hope so, anyway. Moping pictures are only fun sometimes.'
It's more than not-bad. Brice is not like Indigo or Tom, not really. He is too much in the sun.
'Then when I see streamers and lanterns I'll think of you,' Rose tells him, and stands, passing him the half-done picture. 'Send it back if she says no. I can finish it then.'

"Thanks," he said when she gave him permission to move. "So. Why are you drawing me?"

Rose's face betrays no evidence of sarcasm as she sketches in his hair. 'Not losing the ring helps, too.' Not that she would know this.

"Not bad at all," he said with an approving nod. "Yeah. If she does say yes there'll be a party, I think. She'd like a party."
