Application for Meriadoc Brandybuck, Lord of the Rings

The door of the Sorting Room opens, and what looks like a small, curly-headed child walks in, holding a pipe. Only, rather than a small child, the figure is instead rather a tall hobbit; and in taking in the proportions of the room he finds himself in, he looks perhaps understandably confused

It had taken Wishbone a long time, but he did read the Lord of the Rings trilogy. (He liked to imagine himself, oddly enough, as Sam.)

Ooh! You're Merry!

Merry was becoming fast used to this: his grand knight's livery and Rohirrim sword, as well as his actions in the Battle of Bywater, had already earned him the name 'Merry the Magnificent'.

But this was the first time he had been hailed by a talking dog.

"I... am," he said, rather taken aback.

So what was it like working with Frodo and Sam and Gandalf and everyone? Wishbone was dying to know.

"You know Gandalf, little fellow?"

That might explain the animal's ability to speak.

I read about him! he said proudly. I read about all the adventures with the One Ring and the Fellowship and all!

[hobbitwithaplan]

"You read about it?"

Merry looks a little unsure about this. As far as he's aware, Frodo is still working on the Red Book of Westmarch. Perhaps some Gondorian scribe had already recorded the songs they heard during Aragorn's coronation?

"Well, I'm very pleased you know about it."

[woocha]

So am I! I know you're a cool person! Wishbone's tail was wagging by this time.

He laughs, and leans to clap Wishbone's back.

"I am a little more hot-headed than tales may have claimed."

Well, yeah, when a story's based on true events, the author tends to glorify the people involved. But we're all hu...well, hobbit. And dog, in my case.

"Frodo is working on a book about what happened himself. I hope he'll be more accurate; I've never thought of myself as a 'cool' person."
