Rose takes a different approach.

'How long have you been a chimney-sweep?'

"Not long," Bean says. "But I wanted to see what was up there."

Not a lie. He just wouldn't explain why - people expected children to be illogical, didn't they?

Permanent Rose Casson can be illogical with the best of them.

'So. What is up there?' the small girl demands.

"Soot."

Bean holds out his hands for the girl's inspection, and to prove what he's saying is truth.

She looks disappointed, dabbling on his hands for any hidden mica or gold. No. Just powdery blackness, and that never did anyone any good.

'Soot as far as the eye can see?' she sighs sadly. 'That's horrid. I'm Rose.'

"Ho, Rose. I'm Bean. Are you Rose Casson?"

Rose looks a little surprised her name has spread thus far. It's like there's 'The Legend of Rose', which weary travellers tell each other on long cold nights to remind them that at least they don't have to deal with her. They may have lost limbs, water, food and/or relatives, but there is no Rose today.

Then they would go to sleep, happy, and wake up and wish there was a Rose to decorate their cave.

'I am,' she says, twitching her nose and rubbing the soot between her fingers.

"The talking hat suggested I speak with you about creating an ant farm. I think it could be an interesting project."

He wants to study them. If the Formics were to ants as humans are to apes... it might help him get past some kinks in his theories of Formic military organisation.

Oh. Well. Okay.

'First,' Rose directs, 'You should probably get some ants. Or a glass ant-house.' The Casson family approach to pets was to let them go wherever the wind took them. This is how Caddy's driving test was nearly interrupted by a guinea pig giving birth.
