((*chucks Jaime in because none of my other pups are working right now* Warning, workninja, meetings own my soul for the next two and a half hours.))
Jaime kept going back to question 2. "So if solving their crimes is the same as killing them indirectly, they committed 'em in the first place. Wouldn't that be indirect suicide, if you followed that reasoning?" He shook his head. "Uh, sorry. Just don't get why anybody would think that way."
It had yet to apply to him - the crazies he had stopped so far didn't rate the death penalty - but he was from Texas, after all.
The puppet was weird, but it struck him as the sort of weird that he Did Not Want to Know About, so he just gave it a strange look and kept silent.
It was an interesting point of view. "Do you believe in assisted suicide, then? In many places that itself is a crime." Near shrugged. "There are many ways of looking at it. I try to see all the angles, even the ones I don't agree with."
Jaime hesitated, remembering when he'd first discovered where the Scarab came from and what it was intended to be. Remembered how Peacemaker had made no secret of the fact he would kill Jaime if he lost control, and how despite his protests, a small part of him had taken solace in that. But if their situations were reversed... no. "Don't think I could bring myself to do that, if that's what you mean. Not when there's another option." Hopefully, he'd never end up in a situation where there wasn't.
"It's always interesting... everyone has their own place where they draw the line between right and wrong. But most people don't know where it is until they're tested."
Jaime nodded. "No kidding." He had no idea how strong his convictions against killing were until he was bonded with an alien killing machine. The irony there wasn't lost on him. "Kinda wish we didn't have to find out the hard way sometimes."
Jaime shrugged. "Well, if it's easy, it's either suspect, not gonna stick, or probably not worth doing that way." He paused. "Or sheer dumb luck. Can't forget dumb luck, even if you can't rely on it."
"Luck is important, yes. But trusting too much to luck will get you killed faster than anything." He nodded. "I see you've had the chance to learn a few things."
"Unfortunately," Jaime admitted, shrugging. "Enough to be real familiar with Murphy's Law." And to realize he still had a lot to learn. "But enough to know things could be worse." Not crazy, not dead, living family, good friends and dating an angel. Hell yes, it could be worse.
Anyway, this vote? Was a no-brainer. "Think I'm gonna vote for Ravenclaw. Any objections?" The guy seemed pretty smart and pretty observant. Besides, given how bad Jaime was at the secret identity thing, it would probably be better if Near wasn't in the same House.
