((When in doubt, go with a pup I haven't played in a bit. Will be SLOW!))

Pearl took a while to decipher the application. One of the house elves wandering by took pity on her and helped her work through some of the bigger words. She still didn't get the full meaning of the answer to question 2, but there were certain key words that she picked up on.

She bowed politely to the applicant. "Hello. Are you a detective? I didn't know detectives used finger puppets." Pearl didn't necessarily find it odd; she honestly didn't know.

"I am." Why deny it? As long as he didn't come any closer than that to revealing his true identity... "I doubt all detectives use finger puppets. I just find them useful."

Pearl nodded, taking this at face value. "I guess that makes sense. Mr. Nick and Mr. Scruffy Detective used an elec-tric wave detector once. And a teddy bear." Well, he'd used it on the teddy bear first, but then tracking its sale history counted as using it! "I'm Pearl Fey. It's nice to meet you, Mr. Detective."

She peered at the puppet. "What does the 'L' stand for?"

Well, shit. "I don't know," he lied effortlessly. "It came that way."

Fortunately for Near, Pearl was not the suspicious type. Nor was she carrying a charged-up magatama. "Well, they should have told you when you got it. Or maybe you're supposed to guess what it stands for?" she suggested. "Like 'Law' maybe!"

Something did occur to her. "Is it all right if I call you 'Mr. Detective?'" It had annoyed another older girl when Pearl insisted on calling her 'Miss Tomo', after all.

Eager to get off the subject of the fingerpuppet, Near smiled. "Call me Near."

"Okay, Mr. Near!" Near could correct her on the "Mr." part if he wanted; it was habit after all. (She even had to catch herself to drop the "Miss" from Tomo's name.)

She looked at the application, or rather, the next question that she understood the answer to. "Where were you before? We're in Scotland right now," she supplied helpfully, even though Near had doubtless had it explained to him already.

"I was in America," Near said, not bothering to correct her on the 'Mr.'. It was irrelevant. "Waiting for a case, I suppose." He avoided mentioning the cheap-Kira case; it would be a dead giveaway and it hadn't really been worth his time anyway.

"Really? Me too! I was in Los Angeles with my cousin and Mr. Nick, in California," Pearl said. "But I live in Medium Valley. It's about two hours from Los Angeles if you take the train," she added, remembering that a lot of people didn't know where that was but usually recognized Los Angeles. Which made sense since it was such a big city.

Anyway. He probably didn't want to hear about her. "Do you know what House you want to live in?" she asked. She'd had family here when she appeared, maybe Mr. Near did too. It was usually better to stick with your family, after all.

"A few people have said I should be in Ravenclaw. What do you think? Do you think that's where I belong?"

Pearl cocked her head, thinking. He didn't seem like a bad man at first meeting - then again, neither had Matt Engarde. But he didn't remind her much of Engarde at all. Why was there something familiar about him?

Oh! Of course! She perked up as it hit her. They didn't look anything alike (and Near probably wouldn't be caught dead in a ruffled collar), but the way he stood and the way he spoke very little struck Pearl as just the way Mr. Edgeworth carried himself. And he'd been a big help in saving Mystic Maya, after all. "I think you'd do very well in that House," she decided. "Very smart people go there. Mr. Nick and Mystic Mia are there. I wasn't Sorted there, I'm not smart enough, but I live there with my family anyway."

"Well, I'm certainly smart." He didn't say it in a boastful way, merely matter-of-fact. "So I suppose it fits."
