((I think what got me was her just rolling over with that in regards to Henry, but I keep forgetting she has a blind spot where Charles is concerned. ...and wow, I just remembered, Dahlia's a twin too. Still, Charles is a lot more sane and a LOT more subtle.))

Obsession with the law wasn't a concern. To put it another way: if Charles' fixation got to the point where he was plotting with someone else to have himself channeled after his execution by an unsuspecting child in order to murder a total stranger just to get back at Henry... he would have reached the level of Dahlia's crazy. So he probably had a long way to go.

"Oh, there certainly isn't." She wasn't merely referring to law school versus the actual practice, of course. "Parasailing or car chases? No, not that exciting. Most of the stories I can tell are better suited to a comedy of errors than an action movie." Given that she technically wouldn't be starting her career for at least five years and she's a Phoenix Wright character, most of her stories probably wouldn't seem like "the way people really live." They were a lot more entertaining, for one thing.

His comment about ivory towers made her chuckle. "Ivory towers always seem to look better on the outside, I've noticed. To steal a cliche from one of my old mentors, once you get to the top, there's nowhere to go but down." And if you were a Fey? You'd probably be pushed out a window. "I could probably spare some time in my completely empty schedule once I'm allowed out of here. Where would I usually find you? The only thing I know about the houses are that a few people I know from home are in Ravenclaw at the moment."

(( Oh, yes, especially now that Charles isn't a raging drunk. Hee, I'm enjoying this thread! ))

No plan of Charles Macaulay's would ever hinge on his own execution. By anyone. Ever. Especially if that son of a bitch Henry Winter was still alive at the time. All unsuspecting children and total strangers were at least safe from Charles in this regard. His kind of revenge didn't employ so many levels of displacement and circumlocution.

He chuckled too. "A comedy of errors is preferable, really. Comedies always end well. Hm, if you've got friends in Ravenclaw anyway, I'll vote you there. Not coincidentally, I happen to be a Ravenclaw myself. Won't run into me much in the common room, though, I'm afraid. Half of it's a laboratory, which is fine by me, but the other half's a bar, which is bad for my health. So you'll have to look me up on purpose, to which I wouldn't object at all. That, or I tend to hang around the library a lot."

((Me, too. Sorry, got distracted by the raptor reply and actually have to crash now - 8 am workgroup meeting tomorrow, bah. Edited for HTML failure.))

Any plan of Charles' would probably not reach the levels of epic failure that made it necessary to rely on one's own execution to carry out revenge. What she had told Dahlia in court that day was spiteful, yes, but it had also been the truth.

"A laboratory, you say? Might be interesting to watch. From a distance," she added, remembering Lana's stories of her own little sister's more explosive forays into scientific investigation. (If Ema and Maya ever met, they'd probably level half of Los Angeles.) "That sort of bar isn't much of a draw for me, either. I'll definitely - call you? - once I'm Sorted. Unless that requires magic spells as well here."

"Actually ... you might have a hard time with this one, but here goes: No one calls anyone here. No working phones. We send notes by messenger owls."

Half-smiling, Charles scratched the back of his head and looked down, sneaking a glance at Mia through downcast lashes, waiting for the incredulity he rather expected.

He got... a blink. Or two.

"Owls? Well, I suppose that's no stranger than those - house-elves - that run errands here. I'd have thought they would handle messages given that disappearing trick they do." She smiled. "I don't think I'll miss cell phones, myself."

That got her a full-on grin. "That's the spirit. And you're right, house elves will carry messages if you have something too heavy for an owl to carry and you don't want to deliver it in person. Mostly we use owls, though. It's sort of traditional. Some people invest in their own owls. I'd just as soon use the school owlery, myself. I just can't see myself getting heavily into owl maintenance."

It took more than that like a hungry velociraptor to surprise Mia at this point. She wasn't going to have too much trouble adjusting to the weird. "As far as traditions go, who am I to argue with that?" It wasn't as bad as some she'd encountered. "I'd have to agree. I seem to have better luck taking care of plants than animals, anyway."

"More luck taking care of plants than animals? Do I detect a story behind that?"

"More of a preference than a story, really. I've always been better at caring for plants than pets. Of course, my sister has the opposite problem; the first time I was brought back I found out she'd nearly drowned my poor plant - and it had only been a few days." Between Maya and Pearl (or, as Phoenix had once dubbed her, "Typhoon Pearls"), it was a miracle Charley had survived for so long in the office after she was gone.

"My sister isn't much good at taking care of things, either." Charles could relate! "We don't have a Herbology professor here at the moment, which is a shame. I've been thinking about trying to get some houseplants. Just, you know, to make things less bleak. The dorms aren't exactly a triumph of interior decorating."

"True, although I suppose it goes hand in hand with the authenticity," Mia mused. "Plants do tend to break up the monotony, I've noticed. Would it be too difficult to get a simple houseplant here, or would that have to be cleared with the faculty?"

"The dorms back at Hampden were fairly presentable, actually. I suppose the bleakness is more part of the castle theme. Just hope you don't end up a Slytherin: their dorm is in the dungeons." Charles laughed a little. "Precious little needs to be cleared with anyone around here. Tell you what. When you're Sorted, I'll have a houseplant waiting for you."

"In the dungeons?" That house was sounding more and more like it was right up Dahlia's alley. "That makes two of us, then. There wouldn't be much I could grow down there." Even a peace lily needed some indirect light, if she remembered correctly.

She smiled at Charles' offer. "Oh, you don't have to do that. But I appreciate the thought."
