Application for Roy Mustang (Fullmetal Alchemist)

When Roy Mustang found himself in a small room with nothing but a desk and chair, and what appeared to be paperwork littered across the top of the desk, he didn't let it bother him too much. Perhaps he had taken a wrong turn somewhere, but he wasn't one to worry.

One of these days, Ed was going to remember why he tended to avoid the sorting room. The bruise from Russell's sorting had only faded recently, afterall.

So when Ed passed by the sorting room on this particular day, there was a very rude reminder of why he should never, ever visit that room again sitting there. Ed sighed heavily and slouched his way into the room, trying to tell himself that he was only being polite and that he wasn't going in there because he was glad to see that the bastard was still alive.

"Hey, what's with the eyepatch, colonel bastard?," he asked in greeting, trying to sound casual.

Roy just stared at Edward for a moment, torn between being glad the boy hadn't been killed, and doing the job himself. He stayed in his chair as he looked over the- well, he would be a man now. A short one, but it was good to know some things never changed.

"You remember Frank Archer, don't you?" Roy asked, leaning back slightly in the chair. "He shot me. And it's Brigadier General, Fullmetal."

Ed rolled his eyes. "Oh, I just figured you got bumped back down to Colonel, seeing as how bloody coups are generally looked down on by the military."

"By who?" Roy asked, grinning cockily at Ed. "The only person who would have demoted me was, well, dead."

"Yeah, I heard that much from my wi- ah, mechanic," Ed replied, "Except there's no fuhrer at all anymore, so that kind of backfired on you, didn't it?"

"It's only a matter of time," Roy said simply, and his grin faded as he looked around the room. "Assuming I can get back to Central, of course."

"Yeah, well, if you find a way back, tell me first. I've been looking for long enough," Ed muttered.

Well that was disappointing, and Roy sighed. "Where are we, then?"

"Scotland," Ed answered, knowing that it wouldn't help and probably would just serve to frustrate Mustang further. He grinned in satisfaction at that thought.

"Scotland," Roy repeated, lifting his eyebrow at Ed. The grin told him the other man was doing this on purpose, and Roy never had been one to entertain Edward, and he wasn't going to start. "Is that right,"

Damn, Ed thought, He didn't fall for it.

"Yeah. You know, in Europe."

"Europe, of course," Roy leaned forward to give Ed an annoyed look before adding, "I don't suppose you'd like to just give me a straight answer and be done with it."

Ed grinned in triumph- it has been a long while since he'd had the chance to get on Mustang's nerves and now every little victory was a good one. "Short answer? We're on the other side of the gate. Except it's like 2007 here. Nearly 2008, actually."

"The other side of the gate," Roy repeated, and leaned back again. He let his good eye travel over Ed, and finally he grinned. "I see that some people don't grow much even on this side of the gate, after so long."

Ed flinched involuntarily but held himself back, the strain visible on his face. "I'm tall now, okay? Almost as tall as you," he said, even though that was a patent lie.

"Are you?" Roy asked, and stood up to come around the desk and look down at Ed. "I think your perception is a little off, Fullmetal."
