((Spoilers for the first two books of the Lady Penitent trilogy, some spoilerish references to War of the Spider Queen. Permission given from all current Realms-muns, namely Yours Truly))A dark-skinned elf limped into the Sorting Room, his left leg encased in a brace of leather and metal, dragging two overstuffed-looking bags behind him. He came to ( Read more... )

Eragon entered the Sorting Room and nodded a bit in respect to Jezz. He looked over the application. He also listened to some of the other questions,

"So...your god, the Masked Lord as you refer to him...he seems to be a fair and just being for a deity. I'm not sure I've ever heard of that in most legends or myth."

Most "normal" theologians of Abeir-Toril would disagree with that assessment - but then, most of the other usual religious options for drow weren't very big on fairness and justice at all (unless you counted raising zombies to go on vengeance sprees against all who ever ticked you off), so comparatively, yes, Vhaeraun was quite fair (Men's Lib and all) if not exactly "just" (thievery and all).

Jezz said "He is," and meant it. Is. Not was. Essential difference.

"So you've met him?"

Eragon pursed his lips a bit. He looked a bit young to be asking such questions but there's an air of leadership about him. He glanced toward the window and smiled a bit as if he was listening to something far off.

"Saphira says you remind her of the elves back home."

"Not personally," said Jezz. Not just yet. "Some of my cousins are his priests, and a few of House Jaelre have had that honor." They are, that too was important.

"Do I? I hope your elves are more pleasant than most of those back in Toril."

"They are. Although a bit lighter skinned, they are my allies and valuable ones at that."

Eragon took in the information as he got it.

"Do the gods on your world have realms of influence? Is there something that he specializes in that you rally behind? Alagaesia does not really have these, gods, per se, so I must apologize but the entire concept is new to me."

"There is. He 'specializes' in male drow and drow on the surface. He aids males in improving their lot, as well as in our reclamation of fallow elven land."

He sighed with some exasperation, not directed at Eragon. "The elves already on the surface, while happy to abandon their old Court to start with, suddenly decided they wanted it back once their 'cursed' kindred began making actual use of it - I'm sure yours are above that. Then there are the spider-kissers and the dancers. There's dispute, you see, as to just which of the gods has, or should have, drow in their 'realm of influence.'"

"So...in other words there is a power struggle. It sounds not unlike my own world then. Where are you in relation to this struggle? I see you've aligned yourself with your Masked Lord but has the struggle had any significant impact on you?"

He took and exhaled a deep breath. "You could say that. I came here because of a recent... disturbance."

"Then you came as an escape? Or perhaps there's someone here who you are looking for? I'm sorry, I'm just trying to get a good feel for which house you belong in."

"Something of both." Jezz turned around for a moment, distracted by something he thought he'd glimpsed elsewhere in the room, eventually shaking his head and turning back to him. "It's said this place draws people in - the missing, the lost, those thought dead. What do you know about that?"

He raised his left arm to provide a better view of the snake around it. "Keheneshnef wants Slytherin, but it may just be because he likes the look of the House symbol."

"I am none of the above. In fact, I was the first one here from Alagaesia. Then my brother Roran came. So far we're the only two. I have heard others say that they were missing. For me, this place is just a little bit of respite from saving my own world."

Eragon thought for a moment and then smirked,

"Final question, I promise. Name one color that describes you the best."

"That," said Jezz, waving a hand up and down his person, "would have to be black, wouldn't it?"

"Not necessarily. Just because you are black on the outside does not mean you would be black on the inside. Might I take a look at the knives?"

He produced a set, unsheathing one and presenting it hilt-first. "They're made so you can throw them or use them hand to hand."
