Owl to Rachel

Rachel baby,

Scuttlebutt has it that there's an Italian place in Hogsmeade (did whoever founded this place have a pig fetish?) Meet you there later this evening?

Ok, the picture had been adorably awesome. And had made me laugh probably more than I should have. So points to Jack even before the date had officially begun - which boded quite well for the evening.

Dressed up - which I hadn't yet had an occasion to do since coming to Hogwarts, other than on a job, so I was feeling rather good about myself right off the bat - and wearing some new black boots that made my legs look fantastic, if I did say so myself, I headed on down to Hogsmeade. I wasn't quite sure where the restaurant was that Jack had mentioned, but I figured I could find it easy enough.

If by 'easy enough' I meant 'asking three people for directions and getting lost twice'. But I made it and entered the restaurant only a little after seven. Standing at the door, I turned around slowly, searching through the crowd for Jack.

Hodgins had actually shown up early and reserved a table. He had even dressed up, in slacks and a tie, as promised. The effect was somewhat marred by slightly singed hair on the right side of his head and the bugs print on the tie.

He waved Rachel over and pulled out her chair. "You look fantastic!"

Grinning at him, the corners of my eyes crinkling as I took in the print on his tie, I sat down. "Thanks. You don't look too bad, yourself." I leaned over and sniffed playfully. "And your smell doesn't make me gag." Winking at Jack, I sat back and crossed my legs. "Not a bad start, I must say."

He smirked a bit at that. "I think that 'your smell doesn't make me gag' might be the most underrated compliment ever. Do you start all your dates like that, or am I just special?"

Lifting my glass of water I took a sip, regarding him over the rim. "Oh, you're just special, Jacko." I was already grinning, relaxing back into my seat. I hated first dates - I tended to be more than horrific at them - but Jack was easy to be around. And I was determined to have fun.

"So," I picked up the menu, "what looks good? Oh, and I should warn you - I don't do the girl-thing on dates. You know, with the ordering just a salad and water and pretending I never actually eat." I glanced up at him. "So don't be surprised."

"Honestly? That's good. Going against the patriarchy and stereotypes is something I encourage. Personally, I'm always a fan of chicken carbonara. Of course, I have no idea how good it's going to be here, so there's every possibility that this date might end with one or both of us puking in a corner, or god forbid on each other."

Ah. Of course. In an Italian restaurant and of course the human picks the one meal without tomatoes. Which...was actually par for the course - most of the humans I knew blanched that the sight of the vegetable. But that meant I probably shouldn't get the lasagna I'd been craving. Ah, well.

"Sounds perfect." Then I laughed, "Well, not the puking part. So I'll let you try it first - that way I know if it's safe or not."

Then I cocked my head, considering him. "Now, I admit I don't know much about scientists, but aren't stereotypes kind of what you're counting on? Doesn't the rouge person or statistic throw off your whole...scientist groove?"

"What, let the man take all the risks? I'm not that in favor of defying the patriarchy." But he was grinning as he said it. "Sure."

He snorted. "Yeah, some scientists. My career is based on finding the anomalies that help solve the crime. If everything made sense, the lesser scientists could solve it."

"Think of it as an experiment. I'll be your control subject - if you don't die, then I know it's safe for the rest of us." Resting my chin on my hand, I flashed him a teasing smile.

"Ah, so you like puzzles. Good to know." I nodded towards the singed side of his hair, "So what puzzle were you attempting to solve prior to your grand explosion? Which, by the way, I totally feel now as if I witnessed. You really should consider a career in the arts."

"Comforting, Rachel. Very comforting."

He mussed the hair on the side of his head up, trying to better hide the more-singed parts. "I was testing the chemical properties of the core of a cheap spare wand I bought. I still haven't been able to figure out if it's actually unicorn hair, but damned if it doesn't explode when introduced to an acid bath."

Pausing, I then started to laugh. "Wait, so you...dunked some unknown substance into acid? How does that prove anything? I mean, do you know what unicorn hair would do in acid?"

Wands were weird - and wicked expensive, at least the ones I was used to - but the thought of Jack taking one apart and poking it to see what would explode was funny as hell.

"I was testing its chemical properties." Hodgins sounded slightly offended. "And--okay, so I don't know what unicorn hair does, but if it's any number of fibers, synthetic or otherwise, that I'm familiar with, I would have recognized melting points and appearance through microscopes and GC fingerprint. And it didn't, so I decided to see what would happen." He looked a bit miffed. "None of the ones I'm familiar with explode when introduced to an acid bath, so that's something."

One of my eyebrows arched up and I grinned widely at him. "You're cute when you get all geek-speak," I informed him, teasing.

"Did you just pick acid out of the chemical substance lottery? Or is that just the urge to make the biggest boom possible showing through?"

He rolled his eyes. "I'll be sure to discuss isotopes and mass spectrometers after dinner, then. No, I had a plan--see, I could have used the dissolving rate or lack thereof to figure out a kPa and comparing it to the GC printouts to figure out a molecular structure. But then everything went boom, so that's screwed." He grinned. "It was pretty awesome, though."

"So, I'm just going to nod and pretend that I understood everything you said before 'went boom' so you'll like me. Okay?" Smiling back, I tucked a stray strand of hair behind my ear, running one finger idly around the rim of my glass.

"Why are you dissecting a wand? I mean, I thought you were a bug guy. Unicorns didn't exactly have eight legs the last time I read my fairy tales."

"Sure. I'm not going to hold it against you. The gist of it is, test didn't work, boom." He chewed on the complimentary bread. "Well, I don't like to limit myself. I do bugs and particulate matter, so I get to test fibers, chemical makeup, yadda yadda whatever. So I figured hey, why not see what makes a wand tick? No answers yet, but I'll be sure to let you know when I find some sort of conclusion."
