((I'm taking Magrat from the very end of Witches Abroad, mostly because that's my favorite of the Witch books and because it has KUNG FU MAGRAT woo-cha!. Sooo... yep. Magrat before she marries Verence and all that. Feel free to recognize her as the queen of Lancre, she'll just be very confused!))A worried-looking young woman with wild, frizzy hair ( Read more... )

*curtsies* Hello. I am Miss Elizabeth Bennet.

Pray tell me, is there anything special about the jewelry? It looks rather... different.

Oh! Um. Hello, Miss Bennet. *tries to mimic her curtsy, and comes up with something that's more like a slightly embarrassed half-bob*

It's all stuff that I ordered from Ankh-Morpork. It said on the package that the jewelry enhances your cosmic receptiveness to the universe and other mystical things, but... *gives the jewelry pile a look and sighs* to be honest, it mostly gets tangled up in things. Would you like some?

*a bit blankly* Enhances your cosmic receptiveness to the universe. *blinks, then a bit archly* Well. I have heard of a functional brooch or two, but that quite eclipses my previous familiarity with the uses of a bangle.

Have you anything in yellow? I have a particular partiality for said color, though I am also very fond of blue.

*rifles through the pile* ... Most of it's just silvery, I'm afraid. There's a pendant with sort of yellowy stones in the middle, if that helps any. And there's some bangles with blue squiggles all along the sides.

Might I have the bangles?

Of course! Take as many as you like.

*takes several bangles* I thank you. It is very kind of you.

Now it is my turn to fulfill part of the bargain and I must cast my vote to sort you. Have you any idea of what the houses are, or where you would like to go?

Um... I have no idea where I am right now, really. So no to both.

Right. You are at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which is in Scotland. It is a magical boarding school, complete with houses. Houses are comprised of like-minded individuals who reside in the same area. One many have an individual bedroom, or share with a roommate.

The houses are Ravenclaw, Gryffindor, Slytherin, and Hufflepuff. Traditionally, Ravenclaw is for the clever, though with the new addition of a bar, it's also for the drunk. Gryffindor is for the brave, Slytherin is for the morally ambiguous, and Hufflepuff is for the hard-working.

*mostly to herself* ... Right then. Definitely not Ankh-Morpork...

Um... From the sounds of it, Hufflepuff might be best. Either that or Ravenclaw, but I'm not much for alcohol. It can do terrible things to your liver.

Oh, I'm a Ravenclaw myself, though I've yet to indulge in liquor. I dislike how inelegant people get when drunk, and I have no great fondness for spirits.

May I be of any other service, now that I have cast my vote?

*starts thinking of Nanny Ogg and the Hedgehog Song and grimaces* I have to agree with you, there.

You've been a great help already. Er... how did you get here, though, if you don't mind me asking? Did you come here on purpose, or do people just turn up by accident?

Oh, no, I don't mind at all.

Truth be told, I didn't come by choice. I had gone for a walk while I was staying at a friend's home in Kent, and when I returned, tried to walk into the sitting room to have tea. Instead, I ended up here.

I think most people end up here in circumstances similar to my own. Or rather, they were occupied in doing something else and find themselves here for no reason at all. I expect that the school somehow brings them from wherever they have last been.

That's a bit of a relief. It's good to know that this sort of thing is commonplace. Er. Relatively commonplace, anyway.

... Wait, the school brings them in? That's... odd...

As far as I can tell.

Er- have you heard of magnetic attraction? It's a relatively new discovery. At least, it was in my time. I find that it's a bit like that. Er- the school sort of attracts people with similar qualities- in this case, people with the ability to do magic. It brings them here regardless of time or place.

I'm at a loss as to how it really works, or if that's even the case, but it's the best I've been able to come up with.
