This is more a reminder for me then a real comment, but instead of spamming the friends list, I write it down here.
Tried out different RAM. Same result. Generals crashes after a few minutes at the latest. However what is odd is that I can provoke it crashing earlier by running the RAM at full speed (DDRII667 rather then 533 or 400). but not by much. Also changing in the BIOS Asrocks totally undocumented "memory compatibilty mode" to enabled or disabled has a slight effect on when it crashes, but in the end after 5 minutes max it freezes hard anyways. Setting it to Dual channel or singlechannel had also not a noticable effect.
So this pretty much rules out the RAM, since both are different brands, timings etc. memtest also does not report any errors on either RAMsticks.
Disabled sound, no effect. So no IRQ issues, i'd say. I could run it without LAN too, but that seems pointless.
Tomorrow I'll test with a slooooow PCIexpress Nvidia 6600 instead of the 7900GS. Maybe this has an impact, though i doubt it.
I really think that the mainboard is just... a piece of crap. Damn. It had all I need for a decent price. :(
Or XP SP2 just hates me. I'm *this* close to install W2K SP4 on the test HDD again and see, if i can run Generals for hours again. However - generals *had* been running until yesterday, so I wish i knew what caused it to stop working after three days suddenly. :(
Using a Quadro FX 3400 crashed Generals upon starting loading the game (after selecting which army etc.). Hm. This is either the weirdest software issue ever or it's the mainboard. I think I'll tke out the cpu tomorrow after work, repply grease to it and then see if it still crashes using the 6600. If it does, I cave in and get a 965 board from Gigabyte. Arf. :(
