- Jen commenting on my unique method of drying "The Undercarriage."
And now that you are entirely grossed and/or weirded out, I'm back, Bitches!
I don't even know what to write about, it's been so long. Howzabout a poliktical rant? Yeah, s'been awhile since one of those.
The most pressing matter of confusion weighing on my brain right now is this whole debate over illegal immigration and new legislation that would put more restrictions on illegals living in the US. Such restrictions as temporary guest worker permits, paying backtaxes, fines, etc. leading up to in many cases, legal citizenship. Seems to me a fair price to pay, since every legal citizen has to pay taxes an' such, and since the usual punishment for illegal immigrants should be deportation. WHY there is such a furor over this legislation is beyond me, and maybe it's because I only have a bare-bones understanding of the situation anyways. From what I see, many liberal orientated groups and groups representing immigrants say this legislation is discriminatory.
As does Bush.
This threw me for a loop. Liberals and minority groups on the same side of the fence as Dubya. or vice a versa. Whatever. Just one of the increasingly numerous issues that Bush is at odds with with other conservatives. A change of heart? Prolly not.
I been listening to Drew and Mike most mornings, and this issue is a hot-bed for these guys. Trudi, the newswoman, hit on something the other day, I think it makes a lot of sense. Bush is for the admitting and employing of illegals who will "do jobs Americans won't do," an utter line of shit. Have them do jobs that corporations don't want Americans do, is more like it, simply because the average American wants a decent living wage, whereas anyone desperate enough to jump the border and risk their lives or freedom will work for much less and for no benefits. It's not American jobs these people are performing, it's a relatively new type of out-sourcing, because many of these people are still nationals from their country of origin. The baseline workforce of America is shifting to accomodate lower wages and workers who are willing to concede many worker's rights in order to make a better living than they had previously. The rest of the market will have to adjust in order to stay competitive. We are essentially reverting back to labor practices prior to 1900, under the guise that illlegal immigrants need to make a decent wage. Which don't get me wrong, is all well and good, a brother's gotta make a living, but the rest of the workforce must suffer economically and must concede rights that past generations bled and fought and died to achieve. There is no strong labor movement in this country, because the system has been altered such that a labor movement has no leg to stand on. Many, such as the Teacher's union, are getting disenfranchised. Schools are closing left and right, and any teacher who needs a position will take what they can get, and concede rights and wages to do so, because they might not have a job if they try to make a stand. I think it's like this across most industries. Look at GM and Delphi. Workers don't have rights anymore. They work only because the company has spared their necks the chopping block this week. In the meantime, gas prices keep rising (who THE FUCK KNOWS WHY?!), interest rates are rising, jobs are scarce (in Michigan, I don't know about anywhere else), we are racking up the biggest deficit in history (Detroit AND the Federal government), and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight. Seems pretty bleak.
But what do I know. I'm just a bloody English student living outside of his means.
On more positive notes, Violet has spoken her first complete thought. This came in the form of "WOW! COOL! What's That?" She can repeat all the alphabet letters, count to at least three and can recognize other numbers, she know many of her colors, and most of her body parts. She is doing awesomely with potty training, as she has gone pee-pee in her potty for the twelfth time in two and half weeks, and she enjoys grown up foods like mash'd taters, mac n' cheese, french fries, and likes more veggies like carrots.
Plans for the wedding are going awesomely, 'cept we hit a snag when the money for the musician had to go towards Jen's dental surgery. Part of her jaw was rotting away, and she had to have three wisdom teeth removed. She's much better now. Our shower is coming up on May 6th, and I hope all who got invites can attend. Same day as my graduation, so it should be a racous good-time. I might have some home-brew left-over from the game night in a few weeks. For those interested in coming to game night, it's on April 15th, at 7:00pm. There'll be brew, poker, and other board games, and hopefully some good eatin'. Gimme a ringy-dingy if you want to come, or leave a comment.
a'ight slag OFF! Vy's pitchin' a butt!
