Java and Stuff

Well here we are in week 6 of the android programming course, which is actually Java that just happens to also run on an android phone. And I've been pretty much enjoying it, apart from the points at which its fried my brain (like last week, their example of nested FOR loops made no sense at all and light only dawned in the wee small hours of Sunday morning when my brain finally bounced up with "oh, that's how it works!", though luckily being in bed at the time I was then able to get off to sleep despite epiphanies..

I have to say I'm incredibly glad that ganimede is doing the same course as we've been able to bounce ideas off each other (and moan about the parts of the course that haven't worked too well, too), would be much more challenging doing it without a "study pal", though the fact the last couple of emails have devolved (evolved? :) ) into discussions of eating out and tasty food ideas is likely a less academic approach than might be expected..

Its rather eating my online time though, as in between I have been Out and About, and also doing quite a lot of stuff in the house because mum's been really ill so I'm doing most of her normal tasks, plus making more meals. Which is absolutely fine, apart from this then mucking up my usual schedule to the extent LJ posting has not been happening, grr. I have photos, even, as well as a post.

This weeks course introduced functions and it makes sense, though I think as a beginner telling us to "code a function to do something cool and extra to the game!" is a bit more challenging than I'd like - I want monkey see, monkey do, step-by-step at this stage still, but I'll poke at it later this week and see what I can come up with, if anything. At least I understood the simple function we were asked to do first, and how the lengthy repeating code bits were replaced by calling for the same function several time, though I've not bothered to copy and paste all the code in, I'll just use next weeks ready-prepared code with all the changes already inserted :)

I treated myself to a Java for Dummies book which I'm making decent progress with, and hopefully once this course is done I'll find some more tutorials to work through and get practice/ideas for things..
