False dichotomies, or how the Janeites pwned the manslplainer

Apr 14, 2010 01:01

Hey, there.

I'm in a rotten mood, so I won't subject you all to a tale of my (self-inflicted) misadventures. Instead, let me share this rollicking good tale; seethe at the ridiculous generalizations, laugh at the self-important self-promotion, and finally, enjoy the blunt smack of the Cluebat of Janeite righteousness. (Or at least, I enjoyed it. Deeply. Granted, the guy in the comments is one of the reasons I only sporadically check out the Janeites mailing list. I swear to you, his tone and content is every day occurrence, no matter what subject he's expounding about.)

Check both the post and comments (though the mansplaining is in the later there is fail debunked in the post, too). The article is actually a pretty interesting peek into a fairly common dynamic in JA fandom: there are the Academics, and there are the Fans. (There are crossovers, of course.) This is the one fandom in which I've found justified the rejection of academics talking about canon/fandom; not only 80% of the time they talk out of their respective asses to get a little tenure or sell some books, but are so annoyingly self important about it that they may as well be minor Jane Austen characters! (Of course, there are very cool exceptions. I don't remember names nor links, but I can ask E and ETA them later if anyone's interested.)

Anyway! A taste of the mansplaining to you will understand:

Nonetheless, if you haven’t read all of that stuff, no one, no matter how sharp a reader you may be of JA’s novels themselves, can speak on the same terms as the scholars who have.

Oh! What would we do if we didn't have the deep, strong (pseudo) academics to point us to the true interpretation?

. . .

(Seriously, I cannot fangirl Mags more than I do at this moment.)
