Sooo, perused lists of recs, and the whole listing for this year of some fandoms (Jane Austen and 28 Days Later).
This is the result:
{28 Days Later}
East Hastings -- It's a raw vignette painting what it must have been happening pretty much in all England during the first movie. Very honest narrative voice. Loved it.
//"Oh Mum, look at you," I said, and I made her sit in one of the good wingback chairs she always saved for company.//
{Big (movie)}
wring the water from wine. -- Saw the movie so long ago that I thought I wouldn't get it. I did. It's a very cool look on the scenario.
//It takes 14-and-a-half months for him grow as tall as he was at 30. Or however old he was. Billy was right - he could've been older than that.//
{Secret Garden}
Silver Bells and Cockle Shells -- Read the book some time ago. Liked it, but I wished I had read it as a child. I didn't thought of any pairings at the time; I still don't. They're too religious and... children, I guess. This is a very sweet fic, though.
//Mary thinks about Dickon most of all when she is outside: the crisp English wind reminds her of closing her eyes and breathing into the music of the garden; it reminds her of Dickon clutching at her hand whispering "Listen."//
{Northanger Abbey}
Catherine's Adventures in Wonderland -- This one is crazy, though not as crazy as it could have been.
//"'Tis the voice of Mrs Tilney: I heard her complain,
'Being married is hard; I'd be single again.'
So she crept to her husband who lay in his bed,
Brought an axe down upon him and left him there dead!"//
{Mansfield Park}
The Trifling Matter of a Few Pounds -- A little silly and a very much fluffy fic. Sequel. Susan fic. Not at all how I think it would have been, but nice nonetheless.
//It did not, for quite a long while after she began her residence at Mansfield Park, occur to Susan Price that anyone in particular should wish very much to marry her.//
Love and Marriage -- A sad and harsh look at how it may have been. A Fanny says yes to Henry AU. Not entirely sure I agree completely with the characterization, but I don't entirely disagree either. it's interesting.
//"I am afraid your cousin's is not quite a marriage of true minds, my dear," he said.//
As the Starling Said -- Femmeslash, and an odd sort, as well. I like the way it's written. I didn't read it yeserday because of the pairing (Mary/Maria--honestly!), but I'm glad I came back. The story and the characterization left me a little dubious (doesn't seem canon-like--but then, it's probably not what the author was after), but I like the style, and the narrative voice. Very wistful.
//After such weeks of agitation, she could not let any fair and sudden chance slip away for want of boldness.//
{Emma}
Poignant Sting -- Well written sequel. Has its spots of funny irony, which is always a plus. Has a note of weirdness to give it flavour, and very interesting and pretty canon like look at the characters.
//"Ay, very true, my dear," cried Miss Bates, though Jane had not spoken a word--"I was just going to say the same thing."
Jane Austen, Emma //
{Persuasion}
Candle Lights -- Sequel. Wishful, subdued tone. A lovely, short marriage vignette.
//Anne Wentworth sat in her favourite chair, in her preferred corner of the drawing room right near the window, her hand lightly resting on her abdomen. The candles, scattered around the room, cast dancing shadows on the walls, but she had eyes only for the letter in her other hand.//
I've yet to look through the TBC fic, other assorted movies and small fandoms, though. So expect another spat of recs in a few days.
