It is 8:40 and I have finished my one outstanding task. I wish I could sit back and take that as a sign that today is going to be mellow funtimes, but actually these are the days where people rush in with giant rush jobs with impossible deadlines and go, "Oh, hey, you're not doing anything!" And then somehow expect me to finish sooner than I would have otherwise, as if my not being busy beforehand means I've been storing all my energy to collate their binders at superhuman speed, complete with motion blurs. People are weird.
Anyway,
I saw Whip It this weekend. Overall enjoyable. Cast-wise and action-wise, especially. The roller derby parts were, obviously, the best. There was Zoe Bell!!! Ellen Page as Bliss was the cutest sex on wheels ever, and the boy she likes has, well, very believable looks, which is kinda nice. And tattooed Kristen Wiig actually came off as heartwarming. A very strange thing for her to be. Oh, and I occasionally wanted to jump Jimmy Fallon. Disturbing.
Story-wise, it's an incredibly conventional sports movie and follows the formula to the letter, complete with the championship randomly falling on the same day as INSERT PRIOR FAMILY-RELATED ENGAGEMENT HERE. Other less drastic sports tropes include the adorable underdog team, sneaking out of the house, lying about parental consent, rift with the BFF, etc. etc. So that was a little... IDK, disappointing is not quite the right word. I don't know that I was expecting Drew to transcend her genre or anything. And it was quite good in spite of these things, but they were very, very obvious.
