Yesterday at 4:45 p.m. my team got an email informing us of a meeting with Stewart (boss-boss) this morning at 8:30. Which is typical Stewart--waiting till the very end of the day to announce that we all have to be in half an hour early. I'd started shutting down early because the roads are terrible because of the snow and ice, and I had to be sure to get to class on time. Anyway, point being: 8:30 meeting in Stewart's office.
The meeting turned out to be just the DEs (me) and our assistant--my bosses, Dick and Scott, were absent. Why? Because Stewart gathered us together to tell us that they'd laid Scott off Tuesday night. He's out at the end of the month. Scott's been with my team in EvilCorps for more than 12 years and with another team for several years before that. He is the only manager I've had in my 11.5 years with EvilCorps who's treated me like a human being. He's not perfect, but he's the best manager I've had, and he's a genuinely good person. All but two of the books I've worked on since joining this team seven years ago have been with Scott. Last year they switched my reporting structure so that I report to Dick, who works hard to earn his name. Now Dick will be the only sponsoring editor on our team, and we will all report to him.
I took the opportunity to tell Stewart I thought they were making a mistake, and also to share some of my recent crap experience with Dick and his vacation policy, and Stewart claimed that he will work to "help Dick grow" (omg, I only just managed not to snicker) as a manager.
Anyway, I hate this place. I wrote Scott a nice note (he's working from home today, probably to avoid the drama) and he wrote me a lovely note in return. He's doing pretty well with it--told me he hates the direction the company's following and is pleased to be out from under it, though not so thrilled about being unemployed at 56 with a kid in an expensive college.
I went in search of Sarah W to share the news and tell her my motivation for talking with her about a position in her group has gone up, and she was, again, very encouraging. We're having lunch tomorrow to discuss. Because seriously, there are two things that have been holding me back, and they're all personal--loyalty to Scott and our authors, and not wanting to have crap fall on them if I leave. Well, Scott's out of the picture now, and the way Stewart was spinning things this morning, most of my authors are going to be on the list of projects being "jettisoned" to further streamline things.
Okay. I guess I'm going to try to get some work done now, just to show that I'm a good person and valuable employee.
ETA the final bracket that allows the text beneath my cut to show... Been that kind of a day.
