question for those young hipsters among us

Okay, so Christmas is coming in. I've got most of my family covered, but I need advice on my neice. She's 13 and very much so. I wanted to get her some music, but I can't get her to tell me what she listens to. "Stuff," she says. I'd like to get her some good new music that, you know, teenagers like. But I also want it to be good. This summer she ( Read more... )

Yes, and omgicon.

Oh, btw, when you get around to Lost, I just want to have it out there that I said it first (at least as far as I can tell from my flist):

OMGWTFBLACKSTALLION!

Back to the music... For example which artists on The O.C. soundtrack have good full albums that are a bit more upbeat than, say, Death Cab?

Oh, like the soundtracks are almost all what Cohen listens to, i.e. the depressing thoughtful too-hipness of it all.

Hmm, 13? Maybe a girl, but a grrl. Maybe Kelly Clarkson but with a *bit* more cred. Umm ... Fiona Apple? Too mature?

I think the boys are singing Duke Ellington. What do you think?

Yeah, that's my impression of the soundtracks, too... too emo for my J-bug. Fiona's a good thought, though. I'm flipping through the album samples on iTunes now... Maybe a bit too mature, but it's worth considering. liptonrm has a sekrit habit for Kelly C. I shall ask her what she thinks, too, if she turns up.

Hmmm, could well be the Duke. Which song, though. Obviously a loud, upbeat one.

You're all mocking me, aren't you, what with your snide little Kelly Clarkson remarks. I'm on to you two. Really. *sniffs* =D

Yes, I'm feeling especially krazeh tonight. I blame the Vortex.

To answer your question, I do think that your niece would like Kelly Clarkson. If she's into Avril then Kelly would be right up her alley, especially the latest album, Break Away (the first one has this horrible song on it that no impressionable 13 year old girl should hear).

If she likes Maroon 5 then maybe something by the Black-Eye Peas. I haven't listened to much of their stuff but it might work. I loathe to suggest it but the newest Lindsay Lohan or Gwen Stefani CDs might be acceptable as well.

Unfortunately I have never been hip to what the kids listen to. =D

Only a tiny little bit of mocking. The song you put on your mix is quite nice, and I tend to trust your taste. I just have an American Idol bias. Hmmm, Black Eyed Peas... Will check them out, too.

As for being hip, I got the cool cred by my niece simply because I knew who Avril Lagivne was, and because I could sing along with most of her Maroon 5 album. I'm finding it very hard to keep up teh cool. Maybe I'll just get her tacky pink jewlery again. Always a hit.

Aawww, it's so nice to be mocked by the ones you love. =D

Tacky pink jewelry is always the way to go. Just imagine the horror of it all if you got her an album she can't stand and thus lost all of your Cool Aunt Cred. But then, it might be worth the risk.

Naw, naw, I don't dislike the Kellyness, she's got pipes and she's got spunk and she's got cojones. She played that "little waitress from Middle America" thing all the way to the top before revealing that was her job IN BETWEEN record label auditions. Now that's almost Mary Kate-worthy.

The Black Eyed Peas are a puzzle to me. They're so raunchy and smoked out, but so positive and socially engaged, it's hard to decide.

Yes! And, seriously, that was such a stupid plot device. I'm not usually a full-on Kate hater, but except for the last three minutes, this episode left me cold. Clunky writing, weak payoff... Sigh.
