In my absence from LJ posting, these things have happened:
+ World Cup 2010 has kicked off and is now well into the quarterfinals. I'm so proud of what NZ accomplished in the group stages - we went out unbeaten AND finished on top of Italy in the table. Our first group match against Slovakia was a draw, 1-1, the single goal coming from a last gasp header by (previously Danish) Winston Reid. That was at around 0130. At 0830, on the way to my placement in Wellington, I saw this on the wall:
AWESOME. I think it's pretty funny how he had to go and play in Denmark before being noticed by NZ, but then again everyone who wasn't into football here (which, prior to late last year, was about 80% of the population) didn't know names like Ryan Nelsen. I mean, come on. RYAN NELSEN. The man.
Also the man? Mark Paston.
More power to Paraguay as they play Japan soon. My favourite national team, Germany, are killing it as they always do. Their match against Argentina is going to be INSANE. At least, I hope it will be. They played great against England -- spot on passes, really nicking the turnovers and taking advantage of some shoddy defending by England, to say the least. That goal by Lampard -- sad, but certainly no game-changer. I wonder what they're going to do with Capello... England seems to be a bit like the All Blacks: do well in qualifying but crash out on the stage where it matters the most. We've kept Graham Henry and we're doing quite averagely at the moment so I think we have a good chance next year, but anyway. We were talking about football.
Go Germany! And also Spain. A final between those two would be something pretty spectacular to watch.
+ Does anybody have any good books to recommend? I bought The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo but I'm reading In Cold Blood at the moment so I am yet to read how good it is. But, yes, book recommendations, please! I like action, interesting non-fiction (which is so broad but have at it), and those "coming-of-age" books. Also clever and witty books which generally turn out to be by British authors. Has anyone read Making the Cat Laugh by Lynne Truss? I saw that in-store the other night and it looks like a good read... opinions?
+ Currently attempting to find an internship site for next year. Now that I've made up my mind to get over my Pharmacy-choosing regret, it's ridiculously difficult to get a job. I guess that's true for all professions. But by god if they insist on us working for a year before we can actually become pharmacists, it would be a good idea to have not just jobs, but enough jobs available in the first place. Then again, I am not the most stellar presenter of myself... I'm a "see it, not read about it" person. Hm.
