Chapter One- Loss
Karrin stopped dead in her tracks on the docks. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing nor did she want to. One of the walls of the Water Beetle was sprayed with a dark red that Karrin knew could only be one possible thing. The boat was quiet and Karrin didn’t see Harry. She prayed that it was just paint but knew deep down that it wasn’t that. Karrin found she was able to move and darted forward, police instinct reminding her to be careful not to contaminate the scene. She called out his name, hoping that the red was paint and that he would answer.

Nothing.

Karrin searched the ship and there wasn’t a lot to be seen. Harry was gone. She found herself standing in front of the blood stain again and staring at it in shock. This wasn’t possible. There was no way that was Harry’s blood splattered on the wall. Not after all they had been through in the past day alone. She knew Harry wasn’t invincible, but to go out like this. She couldn’t accept it. Karrin felt her legs quivering and promptly turned away from the sight of the blood to support herself on the boat’s safety railing.

She couldn’t think. She had just left him an hour ago to get ready for this stupid date of theirs. What could have possibly happened to him in the span of an hour? Karrin starred down into the murky, cold Lake Michigan. Somehow, instinctively, she knew he was done there. She could play it out clearly in her head. Someone let out a sob and Karrin felt moisture on her cheeks. Was it raining? Her grip was tight on the rails and she knew she was going to have to call the police soon. It felt weird to think that, given that she used to BE the police. She couldn’t recall a time where a crime scene had affected her this badly. Of course, a crime scene had never occurred that had involved someone she had just agreed to date an hour ago, someone whom she had placed her very life in because she trusted him implicitly. “Dammit,” she choked out, “Dammit Dresden. Not like this. It wasn’t supposed to be like this.” Karrin knew it was stupid to say that. Harry risked his neck and life all the time. Any number of people and things had tried to kill him. Karrin couldn’t imagine it though. Why would someone like Harry be forced to go out in a manner like this?

“It’s part of the plan,” a new voice said.

The former police officer jerked up, a quick motion bringing her handgun forward and pointing at the stranger. Her sadness was quickly replaced with anger. What if this was the man who had killed Harry? Of course, that didn’t explain why she hadn’t bumped into him on the boat prior to this, there weren’t a lot of places to hide. She stood her ground; she knew there wasn’t any kind of threshold around this place to protect it from unwanted visitors. This man could be anyone or anything.

She studied him. He was a man of average build and a nondescript appearance. He had dark hair and blue eyes that look like they’d seen too much. The only thing that really stood out about him was the tan trench coat he wore. He didn’t react at all as Karrin aimed the gun at him. He just calmly continued to stare of at the lake as though it held the answers to everything. “Who are you? What are you doing on this boat?” The safety of her gun clicked off, “Did you kill Harry Dresden?”

The man didn’t look at her, “I am Castiel. I am an angel of the Lord.” If he expected a reaction from Karrin, she didn’t give him one, at least not right away. Castiel continued, “I’ve come to deliver a message. I don’t have much time as we are approaching the very moment when the final seal will be broken and Lucifer will walk the Earth.” Karrin watched, her body tense, as Castiel turned to face her fully, “Harry Dresden will return, Karrin Murphy. In order for that to happen you must possess Faith.”

Karrin scowled, Angels weren’t something new to her. She’d been raised Catholic and had had plenty of this angel crap when she’d held Fidelacchius and fought alongside Sanya. Harry had even told her at one point that God had made her a job offer. “What are you talking about? Lucifer…you mean the Devil? What does that have to do with Harry?” Castiel had no answers for her but she felt like she had the answer to her own question, if any one man was going to be involved in an event like the end of the world, it was going to be Harry. He stared at her for a moment, his eyes intense and Karrin felt a chill go up her spine from looking at him.

A second later Castiel was gone. Karrin took a step back and realized she was still pointing her gun at the spot where Castiel had been. She lowered her weapon, her mind reeling with what she had just been told. There were a number of questions in her head, but she knew that there was only one person she could honestly talk to who might have some answers. Karrin looked at the wall of blood again; she had to handle this crime scene first though.
