Character Name: Red
Character Series: Pokemon
Character Age: 14
Background: Bulbapedia article.
Personality: Once upon a time in a land called Kanto, there was a very young boy - let’s call him Red - who lived in a very small town by the sea called Pallet Town, who shared a rivalry with a boy of similar age named Green, and who was thrust into a peculiar adventure on the day he decided to venture past the tall grass that surrounded his hometown. Gifted with one of the many species of Pokemon that lived in his world, Red decided to set off on his own to create a record of every single Pokemon that lived in Kanto and in the process take on the Pokemon League - a challenge most trainers accepted but very few overcame. Leaving his home, Red embarked on a grand journey that spanned over Kanto, taking him over mountains and forests and even through a burial site for dead Pokemon that was rumored - and proven - to be haunted. Although Red’s mission of sorts required him to train his Pokemon team and accept every challenge to battle that fellow trainers threw at him, he never forgot his kindness; for every person out there who he came across that needed help, Red was there to lend a hand. In the end, the immature, sheltered child grew into a self-sufficient, brave hero.

With all that in mind, it’s easier to understand why most people see old eyes when looking at Red’s. Despite looking significantly younger than fourteen, Red is a very serious, solemn kid who more often than not comes across as unnerving with his silence. He’s the kind of person who’s very difficult to get a rise out of, the kind of person who likes to observe and take note of every single thing before opening his mouth to make a comment, and even if he wasn’t, there’s also the fact that he’s incredibly shy. It’s easy for him to sympathize for people and even easier for him to put their needs before his own, but he’s never been very good at keeping friends or even making them to begin with, which goes all the way back to his early childhood when his only friends were the neighbor children Green and Daisy. While it might have been implied that Daisy had a bit of a crush on him, his relationship with Green was hardly stellar with Blue eventually discarding their friendship and turning to bullying Red rather than playing with him. His obsession with Pokemon played a large part in his eventual disinterest in being around Red, although it was also something of a stroke of irony; in an attempt to understand his former best friend better, Red took to learning all he could about Pokemon as well, which helped him develop his own obsession. Thanks for that, Blue.

Even though Red isn’t good at making friends, that doesn’t mean that it’s the other way around as far as the people who find themselves attached to him are concerned. See, past the shyness and the stubborn silence that might strike some as creepy, Red is a VERY selfless person who puts the needs of others before his own, making him very easy to get along with and admire. Even at the cost of his own personal safety, he will go out of his way to help others and expect nothing of them in return. From what canon has shown us, he has (with no amount of speaking on his part) ran errands for complete strangers, opposed a criminal syndicate - Team Rocket - that was all for using violence to capture Pokemon for their schemes, protected lost children, and thwarted kidnapping plots even when it would have been better and much more easier for him to simply ignore the bigger picture and continue on his way. It’s perhaps the subject matter of what he’s seen on his journey through Kanto that has hardened him; after coming face to face with a dangerous criminal who would have no qualms with hurting you, things like ghosts don’t really hold up in comparison. And believe him, he should know - he’s seen those, too.

Before leaving home, Red’s life was a sheltered, pampered one. Because his father kept a job that required him to do God knows what out of town, he’s had only his mother to look after him and attend to his every need. He enjoyed playing video games (a solitary hobby in of themselves, and one that speaks volumes of his personality) and watching TV, but aside from that? Not much else. Red has always been a loner, and even though his somewhat spoiled qualities have diminished substantially since his adventure, that hasn’t changed. His travels have taken him to lonely places, places that eleven year old boys should not be in, and the only company he’s had all this time has been his Pokemon. He’s accepted that people will come and go in his life, but he knows his Pokemon will always be with him; right now, they’re the closest thing he has left to family. His love for them is exemplified with the Espeon he keeps on his team - a Pokemon that one can only get if its pre-evolution form, Eevee, has a great deal of love for its trainer. True enough, Red fosters a great concern for the wellbeing of all Pokemon in general, making it easy to see why he has gone through great lengths to achieve them.

As a final note, although Red has become a legend in his own right, it has come at the cost of his own relationship with his family and friends. Even his own mother hasn’t heard from him in a very, very long time. It isn’t generally known why he abandoned his title as Kanto’s Champion, but one need only look at the way he relentlessly trains on the peak of Mt. Silver with an overpowered team of Pokemon to believe that it was due to reasons of boredom and a desire to find new challenges…which he doesn’t until Ethan/Lyra/Crystal show up. To this extent, Red’s life as it is now is a very hollow one with him being too emotionally burnt out to invest himself in much else except his own training, whether it be stopping Team Rocket’s reappearance in Johto or even bothering to exchange words with the trainer that comes to challenge him on the peak of Mt. Silver.

Abilities: Red has no supernatural abilities or skills. Without his Pokemon, he’s just an ordinary boy with nothing particularly fascinating about him other than the talents he’s picked up while living in the wild; he can, for example, survive in the harsh snowy climate of Mt. Silver with only a sleeveless jacket, and he’s able to walk/run for very long distances without feeling fatigued.

With his Pokemon is a different story. To put it bluntly, the kid is a tactician and a badass. After spending the last two and a half years of his life battling only the best trainers, he knows the ins and outs of Pokemon, including type advantages and weaknesses. Canonically, he’s the strongest trainer to have ever been fought in the core series. While his strategies might change depending on the Pokemon he’s using (for some, he might intend to go all out with their strength, but others might be commanded to fight a defensive battle rather than an offensive one), his determination and absolute refusal to give up doesn’t.

As of right now, Red’s current lineup consists of Pikachu, Blastoise, Charizard, Venusaur, Lapras, Snorlax, and an Espeon which he keeps in a PC box.
