RL with Bella

It was times like these he wished he wasn't what he was. If he had been normal, he never would have gotten the stupid idea in his head he could somehow save Rue. All this time he kept up hope that she would get hurt and he could convince a world hopper to send him there. He could have taken her to La Push where she would always been safe and well ( Read more... )

Bella didn't know Rue. She barely knew about the Games other than what she'd skimmed through a time or two. But she knew enough to know that Jacob knew Rue. And that Jacob was more than torn apart by her death right now. But when he was in wolf form there really was nothing she could do but wait. The joys of being small and human.

There finally came a time in the night when she heard something that wasn't just a the house settling. Movement outside too large to be ignored. She went to her open window, quilt wrapped around her shoulders to protect her from the chill and just... watched Jake. Waiting to see what he was doing.

And when it appeared that he was just going to lurk around outside, she finally made the walk quietly downstairs, slipping past Charlie's room, exited the house quietly.

"Hey," She said... pathetically. She didn't know what to do for him, though.

He should have come to see Bella sooner. Jacob had no imprinted on Bella but, she still had an effect on him nonetheless. Seeing her reminded him there was still one person he was capable of protecting. The change was quick as always.

One second there was a wolf standing there and the next Jacob was straightening.

He walked toward Bella, visibly tired. He didn't say anything. He just hugged her.

She didn't stop him as he came and wrapped his arms around her. Why would she? If she couldn't do anything else for him, at least she could do this. She didn't hesitate to wrap her arms around him and hold him close, trying to comfort him in any way she could.

Bella would probably never be able to understand the kind of burden Jake carries with him. But the least she can do is be there for him when he needs her.

He needed that comfort. Today had been difficult. His pack could feel the emotions but, they had no idea what was upsetting him. Knowing that they could never know about the community was a disadvantage for once. Just this once he needed someone in his head to reassure him.

"I won't ever let that happen to you." That should go without saying but, today was different. He needed to believe that he was still capable of protecting what was important to him.

Even if they knew each other briefly, Rue had been important. Jacob had admired her strength and courage. It made it too easy to get attached to a child he knew was likely doomed.

Bella let's out a heavy sigh at that before taking his face in her hands and bringing him down to her level to quietly press her forehead to his.

There's so many things she needs to tell him. That she needs him to know. That things like this happen on the community. That as much as he wants to be everyone's hero... he can't. None of them can. Somethings are beyond anyone's control. And this place can beat that into you.

But she doesn't. That's a conversation for another time.

"I know, Jake." I know that it hurts. I know that you want to change things. I know that nothing will ever make this right. I know that you'll protect me.

Jacob sighed. Was he relieved to here she still had confidence in him...? He didn't know. There was no reason for her or anyone else to doubt him. He did everything he promised Rue he would do.

He talked to her to the very end no matter how ugly things got for her. He never passed judgment over the things that game put her through just like he promised. Rationally he knew just by being her friend he had given her more than most people on that world did never mind the promise.

This feeling came from the unrealistic expectation that he could somehow exceed the practical things he gave Rue. Being here with someone as rational and intelligent as Bella made it easier to realize than hours running alone.

"I'm sorry if I worried you. I just needed time."

She nodded her head, taking in a deep and heavy breath. She felt Jake's pain almost as though it were her own. Her heart just... broke at seeing him like this. And she could sense all the reasons why he felt this way, even if he didn't voice them.

"I understand. It's fine," She reassured him before her sense came back to her a little and she finally released his face.

"You want to come inside for a little bit?"

Jacob nodded. "Yeah. Just for a little while." He did not want to be alone right now. Just sitting there alone in his own head pretty much guaranteed that he would end up stuck in his wolf form again. Right now he just wanted to be Jacob.

"Do you got anything to eat...?" He cracked a small smile. Even depressed Jacob could still work up an appetite.

Bella leads him back into the house now, still careful of Charlie asleep upstairs. He likes Jake, but only so much. Still, Charlie won't notice as long as they're quiet. So she holds her fingers to her lips to tell him to be a little quiet before taking him back to the kitchen.

"You can raid the fridge. I'll go shopping if you take too much or something."
