BBC's new series Sherlock

I've been hearing a lot of friends rave about the BBC's reinterpretation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's consulting detective. So I downloaded the first movie (at 90 minutes long, it's hard to call it an episode) and it's easy to appreciate what everyone sees in it.

To use the old joke: Stephen Moffat is my master now...

While Holmes purists will probably rankle at the modernization, the spirit of the characters is well preserved. Benedict Cumberbatch plays this modern Holmes as brilliant but slightly prickly to those around him. His air of aloofness and his slightly odd appearance make him seem almost alien at times. He rattles off his deductions in classic form, much to the annoyance of all around him. Martin Freeman who I know mostly from his appearance as Arthur in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy movie plays Watson as a well grounded opposite to Holmes almost fanciful tendencies. They make fun of the homosexual undertones many people see in the characters. Moffat pretty much states Holmes is asexual for the most part, focused only on his work with a monomaniacal focus. Moffat's humor comes through wonderfully, with Holmes and his sense of utter giddiness when he is confronted with a case to solve, much to Watson's dismay.

They have three movies made for this season, I am hoping they get picked up for more next year.
