Part One:
A week before their friend’s wedding, Yoseob, Junhyung, Dongwoon and Kikwang were out partying. They were planning to go over to Doojoon’s and throw him a final congratulatory celebration. However, it didn’t turn out like that. On the ride there, the four of them were carjacked, Yoseob ended up being shot in the chest. The other three watched him die right before their eyes, and couldn’t do anything. Sure, the paramedics were called, but that wouldn’t do anything. He died before they were able to reach the scene.
Instead of a wedding, they had a funeral. Doojoon had postponed it due to the fact that Yoseob was going to be his best man and that he was dead. Hyunseung was still in shock over the thought of losing the blond. Nobody had really understood why until he flat out told them they were also supposed to be married that year. Once the funeral ended, Doojoon and Kikwang headed to their apartment while Dongwoon and Junhyung stayed with Hyunseung.
“Are you going to be alright, hyung?” Dongwoon asked, placing his hand on Hyunseung’s shoulder.
“I don’t know,” he mumbled. “Maybe someday, but not anytime soon.” He looked to his friend with a tear streaked face. “Yoseob had been my best friend through everything that happened. He always put a smile on my face when nobody else could.”
Junhyung pushed away from the lonely tree that was shading Yoseob’s marble headstone. “Hyung, why don’t you stay with Dongwoon and I tonight?”
The eldest shook his head, his hair falling into his eyes. “No thanks, Junhyung. I don’t want to be a downer for you guys.”
“You aren’t one, Hyunseung. Being upset is the only logical thing to be at a time like this. It was only a week ago…” Junhyung dropped the sentence before he, too, starting crying. They had all worked at the same company and had been best friends since the day they all met.
Hyunseung looked up at him, fresh tears spilling over. “I didn’t even get to say goodbye…” He leaned over and place his forehead against Dongwoon’s shoulder, sobs erupting from his throat.
“None of us got to,” Dongwoon said, trying to soothe his friend. He looked to Junhyung, his eyes pleading for some sort of help.
Junhyung kneeled in front of Hyunseung and forced him to look at him. “If it takes me my entire life, I promise you, Jang Hyunseung, that I will catch the guy who killed Yoseob.”
Hyunseung threw his arms around Junhyung’s neck and sobbed harder. Dongwoon helped Junhyung get Hyunseung to their car and into the back seat. Junhyung handed Dongwoon the car keys and climbed into the back next to their friend.
“I’m driving?” Dongwoon asked, pointing stupidly to himself. He sighed, climbing into the driver’s seat. “It might take longer this way.”
“Just drive, Woonie.” He met the younger man’s eyes in the rearview mirror. It wasn’t a pleading look, but one of grief and apology.
As he drove, Dongwoon was sure to pay more attention than usual. Subconsciously, he hit the button on his car door, automatically locking all four doors. Occasionally, he’d peer into the mirror hanging above his head, always seeing Hyunseung’s head resting comfortably on Junhyung’s shoulder. He couldn’t help but feel a small pang of jealousy towards Hyunseung.
Junhyung’s focus, on the other hand, was not at the person resting against him, but out his window. He was mentally recalling every detail about the night one week ago. The man who carjacked them had been tall and quite skinny. Brown hair, dark eyes, baggy clothes. A regular street hoodlum. But why did he seem so familiar then? Junhyung was pulled out of his thoughts when Dongwoon cut the engine. They helped Hyunseung inside their house and led him to Junhyung’s room.
“Get some rest, Hyunseung. If you need me, I’ll be in the living room,” Junhyung explained, pulling the blanket up around Hyunseung.
“And I’ll be right next door if you need me,” Dongwoon added. The two of them retreated from the room, switching off the lights and heading to their designated areas.
Hyunseung laid quietly under the covers. He stared up at the ceiling, trying to process his thoughts. He had no one else but his friends to depend on. Doojoon was supposed to marry Kikwang today, but they put it off because his own fiancé had died. At the very thought of the blond, Hyunseung felt his eyes burn again from unshed tears. He let them run down his face as he rolled over to bury his head into Junhyung’s pillow. Nothing was going right for him in his life.

Downstairs, Junhyung grabbed a blanket from the storage closet across from the stairs and threw it onto the couch. Afterwards, he sat down on the piece of furniture with newspapers, internet printouts, anything that would help him in his search. He put everything on the coffee table and pulled it toward him. Scratching his head, he leafed through all of the articles, trying to piece together somewhere to start.
“This is getting me nowhere!” he said in frustration. He heard footsteps shuffle to the left of him and he looked over, spotting Dongwoon staring at him.
“You’re really trying to figure it out?” the younger asked him.
Junhyung leaned back, resting his head on the back of the couch. “Yeah, I am. All of this doesn’t make sense!” He turned to look at his friend. “That guy looked familiar! Like I saw him somewhere before…I just can’t remember where.”
A scream from upstairs had Junhyung uprooted from the couch and hurrying up the staircase, taking two at a time. He flipped on his bedroom light, looking to Hyunseung. He was sitting with his knees to his chest, arms wrapped tightly around them. He looked up at them with a panicked expression, tears rolling once more down his cheeks.
“I saw him…” he whispered. He glanced to the window. Wind was blowing the curtains lightly, every breeze sweeping the room.
“Who?” Dongwoon asked, following Hyunseung’s gaze.
Junhyung already knew the answer to that. He had witnessed it, too. Earlier outside the car window he thought he saw him. Junhyung spoke before Hyunseung had the chance to.
“Yoseob…”
