evidently there's damage and danger in the air

Right now there are about two dozen little birds playing in the hedge just outside this window. Some sort of finches, I suspect. They're just about hummingbird size, but with fatter bellies and different feathering and beaks. So cute.

Last night I hung out with my friend Jesse, thinking we'd just walk about and maybe have a beer, but then he got word that a friend of his had been shot, and her daughter killed, and that rather turned things upside down. It's a horrible thing to have happen, and the details of the situation make it even harder.

When I came home, around 10:30, there were a couple sheriff cars in my alleyway, lights on, and a K-9 sheriff car parked across the street from the alley entrance. I don't know what that was all about, but they were there for quite awhile. In some neighbourhoods that may be a frequent occurrence, but not here, and especially not sheriffs or K-9s.

This morning, my neighbour's puppy was run over by a car. He wasn't killed, we think it was just his paw that was run over, but he hid himself under their deck, so it was hard to tell what the damage is. I tried to help the woman who lives there coerce the puppy to come out, and that didn't work. I suggested unscrewing a few planks of decking, and she said her husband should be home soon, so hopefully they've got that all taken care of.

I stopped into mom's office for a quick chat, only to find out that one of their long-time employees was just diagnosed with five bleeding ulcers. Poor fellow!

I don't like all this sudden, shocking nastiness. I'm going to eat some lunch, head down to Worksource, and hope the day doesn't present any more horror.
