Vegetarians and Vegans

Mar 27, 2007 14:29

Okay so let me say that this isn't about vegan/vegetarians in general.. that's a whole 'nother can of worms that I won't bother getting into at the moment. Just certain ones I'm gonna go into now. First, what annoys me, for no good reason I'm sure, is how they need to specify what they eat/cook is vegan ( Read more... )

I know quite a few who said they went because of babe.. I still talk to some of them but.. I try to avoid the subject because it'll make me pull my hair out.

Glad to hear yours is doing fine. I know you aren't anymore, I read it in your journal and you were one of the people I considered under 'knowing-that-got-sick.'

And you see my point exactly. People feel the need to point it out to make them feel special.

And I'd talk to you on aim but you change your damn sn so much.

Hmmm, I specify because everyone is dying to go, "Gotcha! Those aren't vegan!" Really. Maybe it's just people I know, but so often people try and go, "You eat bread/spaghetti/whatever else they think has some animal bi-product in it?!" It's even more irritating than adding "vegan" to everything, trust me. I wish all non-vegans cared little enough that there was no need to specify, but really, for a lot of us, it's a response to other people's ridiculousness.

Hmm, I can def understand and agree to that counterpoint. I'm sure there are plenty of people specifically wanting to give all vegetarians/vegans as hard of a time as possible. For the record, that is not my goal, it is only certain types of vegans I feel the need to say things to, mostly because I don't believe they are genuine at all. But... while I'm sure what you said applies to a good amount of people, I'm sure most, at least most I know, more go along with what Jen said, with just feeling a need to point it out to feel special and different. And that's what irks me. It's the same idea as people who feel the need to say that they listen to Classical music over and over. I'm sure almost everyone can enjoy classical music at least once in awhile.

PS: I love for people to disagree and challenge my opinions. You're welcome here anytime.

I definitely see your point too, though. I went to school (briefly) in New Paltz, and what drove me absolutely nuts was the "hippie" kids. Ugh. They would always have their tea bags hanging out of their cups, and you knew it had nothing to do with flavor. You knew they just wanted you to be aware that they were drinking tea and not coffee because they were hippies.

I remember walking to class one day and seeing an older man go up to some white kid with dreads. I hear him go, "Wow, your hair.... I've never seen anything like that outside of National Geographic!" I cringed and practically ran from the situation. I could almost hear his ego crushing things behind me, and I knew I might have to do something horrible to deflate it and save myself if I stuck around. It almost made me wish I'd gone with Marist.
