Well, it started a couple of months ago when I researched how to make tamales.
Then over a few weeks, I gathered together most of what I would need to make the tamales, and kept reading up on the recipe and watching online tutorial videos.
Then, earlier this week, I purchased two pork shoulder roasts, and began the grand experiment.
For filling, I opted for carne adovada, which is pork marinated in red chile sauce. So I started some dried chiles soaking.
The next day I blended up the now-soft chile pods and made them into a sauce, then I trimmed and cubed the pork and put it in to marinade for 24 hours.
The day after that, I started up the slow cooker and put in the pork and let it cook for nearly 24 hours.
Today, I finally made the masa and soaked the husks and made the tamales. It took me 4 1/2 hours to use up all the masa I made, and it is yielding two steamers-full of tamales.
We had some for dinner tonight. They're amazingly good. The rest will be frozen for future meals.
In all, it's going to be 10-12 two-person meals' worth of tamales for under $25. Well, and 4 days of my life, on and off. But yum!
Yay!
