Chapter 19:

Point of Change

Ohno sat straight up on his floor, more confused than he had ever remembered being in his whole life. It wasn’t a dream, because Ohno knew he was awake when it happened. Well, kind of awake. It was between dreaming and waking up, when your mind is still calmest.

Ohno sleeps with several pillows and a couple favourite stuffed animals, birthday gifts from Aiba over the years. The one that caused Ohno to bolt awake this morning was his own oldest animal, a fluffy stuffed kitty with cute brown, button eyes and that fit perfectly to the curve of Ohno’s body as he slept.

Ohno was dozing that early morning before his alarm clock went off for school and as he rolled over onto his side, Ohno’s face buried into the stuffed animal’s fur.

Being too sleepy to care, Ohno didn’t move the animal away and tried to fall back asleep. He took a deep breath and smiled to himself in complete comfort.

Then it hit him.

The kitty was not his kitty at all... it was Nino. Nino was sleeping next to him and Ohno had stuffed his face into his hair. It didn’t startle Ohno in the slightest at first. His scent was very calming and his hair was like silk against his lips and nose.

A part of Ohno’s mind, that had been tucked safely away, came out while he was dozing and was finally at peace that Ohno was waking up next to Nino.

He slowly slinked an arm around Nino’s waist... and found his arm falling off the bed. Ohno, expecting Nino to be next to him, followed his arm and tumbled off the bed, bringing pillows, sheets and stuffed animals with him.

Falling to the ground in a muffled thud, Ohno was almost fully awake now and knew that his subconscious had made up the whole Nino scenario. Tangled under all the rumpled sheets, Ohno laid on his back and sighed.

He turned his head to the side and looked at the pink smile of the kitty next to him. Pouting slightly, Ohno hugged it close, squeezed his eyes shut and tried his hardest to make the scenario come back.

"I do love him."

Ohno bolted up and stared around him in confusion. His mind was talking again and this time it was loud and clear like it was shouted in his ear. Ohno shook his head a few times and blinked in the early morning sunlight, still hugging the kitty close.

"Why else would I have thought Nino was next to me? And I was totally okay with it..." Ohno thought to himself, frowning deeply in concentration until his alarm clock started to buzz a half hour later, signaling his time to get ready for school.

It wasn’t that Nino was jealous of Aiba and Sho getting back together again, in fact, he was very happy for them. But he couldn’t deny the feeling of being forgotten. Walking into the school, Nino was surprised to see Sho waiting at his locker, not looking like a zombie that was only brought to life for studying.

Sho spotted Nino and smiled.

"Aiba’s not with you?" Nino asked as cheerfully as he could. Sho smiled shyly and laughed.

"No, he and Jun are already in class." Sho replied through giggles. Nino scowled at Sho’s weird laugh and the way he stood like a schoolgirl talking to her crush.

"You look gross when you do that." Nino advised him before opening up his locker to take care of his shoes. Sho quickly cleared his throat, straightened up and reminded himself that he was in a public place.

"We want to talk to you after school. And don’t try and get out of it." Sho warned, watching Nino fumble with his shoes.

"If it’s about Oh-"

"Just meet us. We miss you." Sho said sincerely with a smile. Nino stared up at Sho from the ground where he sat, barely hearing the bell for class.

Sho held out his hand towards Nino and pulled him up when he grabbed hold.

"Fine, I’ll meet you." Nino grumbled forcefully, closing his locker and heading off to class with Sho’s comforting hand patting his shoulder.

If Ohno really thought about it, he wouldn’t be able to remember how he got to school, how he got to class on time or how he ended up in art class.

But here he was, sitting at his easel, paintbrush in hand with Ayako next to him, painting away with her rock music blaring through her earphones like always.

Ohno came to the conclusion that he must have a hidden autopilot function that he often used without his knowing. He was obviously still very, very confused with the strange dream from that morning and found himself trying to remember embarrassing details.

"Was he wearing anything? Was I wearing anything? Did I... I remember... kissing his shoulder... and definitely his neck..."

"Ohno-kun? Ohno-kun?"

"...he was warm..." Ohno mumbled out loud, still thinking he was in his mind.

"...eh?" Ohno looked next to him and saw Ayako staring at him with a mixed expression of wanting to laugh and wanting to get as far away from Ohno as possible.

"...I don’t know." Ohno mumbled again, still staring at Ayako.

"Are you okay? You looked totally out of it when you came in today... and you’ve been staring at your canvas for a long time." she asked quietly after turning off her music. Ohno half smiled and nodded.

"I think I’m on autopilot..." Ohno replied softly, looking away from Ayako’s worried pout. She patted his thigh softly and replaced the earphones.

"Well, better snap out it. Sensei just told us he wants to see us after class." Ayako said before more rock music flooded her ears and she returned to painting. Ohno watched her moving to the fast beat and wondered how she could paint such calming things with so much emotion.

He looked back to his own canvas and studied the harsh lines and colours that hardly blended. What he wanted to express definitely wasn’t coming out at all.

"So, just for your three’s sake, I’m supposed to go see Ohno and accept an apology he never made?" Nino asked slowly, looking at each of their eager faces. The three boys nodded, hoping Nino would finally give in after begging and pleading for several minutes.

"And by accepting this apology... I’m going to be putting myself back in the situation where I can look at Ohno, but can’t touch him." Nino said bitterly.

"But wouldn’t it be better if you just talked to him? You’ve been so lonely Nino..." Aiba pleaded with his best pout.

"He wants you back in his life. Even if nothing happens between you two, don’t you still want to stay in touch?" Sho reasoned.

"Ohno can’t even remember dance steps, he’s so messed up." Jun added.

Nino looked out over the field, watching lines of students making their way home after school, and sighed into the breeze.

He didn’t like this idea at all... but the temptation alone of seeing Ohno again was starting to get much stronger. So very, very strong.

"Is he going to break?" Aiba whispered to Sho. Sho shrugged and tightened his fingers around Aiba’s.

"He looks tempted... look at his concentration, he’s definitely thinking this through." Sho whispered back. Nino paced a few times in front of the three before stopping and facing them.

"What do I say when I see him?" Nino asked sharply. Not entirely expecting this question, Sho, Aiba and Jun looked at each other blankly. Aiba started to fidget in his seat, knowing the answer but not entirely sure he should say it out loud.

Sho looked at him strangely and nudged him softly.

"Aiba-chan?" Sho questioned, bringing Jun’s and Nino’s attention to him. Aiba looked at his friends and shook his head.

"I could use some help." Nino said. Aiba looked to Sho and then to Jun and settled on Nino.

"Tell him you’re sorry for everything and... you’ll always be there if he needs you." Aiba said slowly, a little unsure of his words. A soft breeze blew between the four as they sat on the roof silently. It was a simple, sincere answer and Nino sighed.

Aiba stared up at Nino, growing a little anxious by his cold expression. A few more moments passed and a small smile appeared on Nino’s face.

"Is he still here?" he asked softly, feeling a little embarrassed by the grins of Sho and Jun and the glomping hug from Aiba. Even though Nino was being ushered down the roof stairs by his three overexcited friends, he couldn’t help but to feel a little nauseated.

It would take more than an apology to get Ohno to forgive the hurtful things he once said.

A/N: I was going to post this tomorrow, but I'm going to be busy >.<
